Banning BYBs?

I've seen a few old members on old threads banned with the subtitle "backyard breeder" or something like that...but I've seen new members posting about how they just bred their shelter mutts, to the point where the threads get locked, and they don't get banned. Why is that? Are we hoping they stick around and learn from their mistakes? Some seem beyond hope, and in my experience it's pretty dang difficult to convince people who intentionally breed mutts that they found on the street, passing them off as purebred or even specific bloodlines, that what they are doing is wrong. Just my two cents, wondering why this seems to have changed.

I'm guessing that's why. Although I agree with you, I also see that if we just ban these people, they'll probably feel this site is just BS and they'll feel justified. If we can reach only one would be BYB, isn't it worth it to not ban them and give them the benefit of the doubt? The only thing we have to gain is by not having to hear from them again. If they keep their crap up, they'll get banned for some other reason.

    Noted, good points!

  5. I know we have a member that had bred their dogs but after reading and learning from the forum they no longer do. The people that want to learn will and those that do not.. just wont.

Right. But they'll learn nothing if we ban them.

  7. The bold (if I did it right) :) is what I think you are talking about... I know that with at least one member.. it did.

i know one of the members who was banned for this was a long time member of the site and SHOULD have known better, time after time of irresponsible breeding given another chance, and than her dog was found on Hoobly and she was banned, i think people should have a CHANCE to learn, but if they keep it up, why keep them around?

Sometimes we have to make judgement calls that aren't easy.

As a staff, when labeling or judging someone as a BYB, we discuss it, then decide on whether a ban is in order. We don't take banning lightly here, we would like to keep all of our members, the good, bad, ugly and furry. We'll give a member repeated opportunities to redeem themselves, we offer temporary bans, and we even lift lifetime bans.

It's just not as easy as saying 'he's a BYB, ban him.' All of you can use the opportunity to teach and share your knowledge for the 101th time. It's like ground hog day here!

I don't have a problem with that, and agree with that. More often than not though, I think it's mostly a problem of simple ignorance.

The only member I remember being banned for being a blatant peddler absolutely knew better, and the sire was put down after some time due to human (or maybe dog? I've heard both)aggression if I'm not mistaken, after selling many pups from a puppy sire, on Kijiji, saying it was an accident, and then opening up a BYB kennel with a website. No health, temperament, or conformation taken into consideration, just $$$. They'd been active members here for a long time, and knew a lot about the breed they were helping destroy, it wasn't innocent ignorance.

  18. I have a litter of mutts. As you all know or now do. I've actually had 3 litters with our akc registered golden retriever juliet and my Charlie. 1st was a fuck up. Long story if anybody is actually interested and even tho it was hell i absolutely loved it. Loved em all. Then my living situation got better and I wanted to do it again since we had the opportunity to do it under much better sircumstances. And I did. Still have contact with most of the people who got one and they all absolutely love them. I thought no more mutts tho after this but quite a few people wanted another or who didn't get one wanted one. So we said well shoot.. let's do it. I met a handful of people from people with autistic kids to a family who's been rejected from shelters around here for having small children and they couldn't get the dogs they wanted to adopt. Hell I got a guy who does a horse rescue and has a handful of dogs(including 2 of mine) coming back for a 3rd. The gal who wanted the pup with the soft murmer just lost her dog do to liver failure and was on the fence about a dog with a problem so we are reserving her 2nd choice until the follow up at the vet to determine if its innocent or not since the vet was a bit concerns with how far down he could hear it. Depending on the follow up results her dad is going to give her 1k to help with it if she keeps him or she will go with 2nd pick and we will be keeping the murmer puppy and will be deciding on what do do wether it be euthinasia if it's going to sacrifice the quality of life or shorten it, keep it if it's not sever or wait until someone who is aware of the issue and willing to provide the care needed for it. I stand behind all my dogs and at any point in time will take a dog back if someone can no longer care for it and will board a dog for someone if they need help with that for what ever reason they need. And I've exercised that while a couple was having home issues/trying to move. I'd also not hesitate to put down a dog that was human agressive. My dogs are pets. I'm clear with people as to what there getting and a handful of people like to come spend time with the pups before there available for pickup. A dog that comes from me is a dog I'll take care of for life. Even if it makes my life a bit more difficult. Words from this byb.

There's really no excuse in my mind to produce mutts or dogs of unproven quality, I can get that from a shelter. There's already a population issue.
