bad allergies, need help

My AB has bad allergies from pollen. I've brought him to the vet and they put him on prednisone for 10 days and told me to give him a bath 2x a week, plus give him "aller-g" oil supplements on his food and he gets 2 Claritin pills every morning. It worked for about a month, but he is now miserable and does not want to do anything but sleep and scratch. Does anyone have any input on what else i could do. I'm going to bring him back to the vet soon if i cant find something else to help him. He is such a great dog i would do anything for him.

If it's that bad, have your vet refer you to a specialist. You'll probably want to have them run a full allergy panel, which will cost quite a bit, BUT you'll know what to avoid and may have to have your dog on prednisone throughout the whole allergy season.

Also, what is he eating?

What about allergy shots?

I've never heard of/tried this but what about putting a tshirt on him while he's outside so block the pollen?

He is on science diet "ID" from the vet, he was allergic to something in the regular food "eukanuba" i was giving him when he was 3 months old. I also tried a few other quality dog kibble, but all of it gave him loose stool. Hes been on the ID for about 1 1/2 years and his stomach/stool has been fine.

I'm not by my computer so I can't check but are there grains in his prescription formula? That might be a problem since it sounds like you've alway fed grain inclusive kibbles. Consider a grain-free alternative such as Earthborn.

Wife just called me, she made an appointment at the vet for 4:30 today. They may have a solution. They are the first vet i actually trust and they don't rip you off. I'll update what the vet says. That way maybe someone else can benefit from it. Thanks for the replies.

There is a store near me that sells Earthborn grain free dog food, I'll ask the vet if this may also help. Thanks for the info. Updates to come later. :-)

If you're willing to do anything:

-Switch your dog to a California Natural grain free and single protein formula made for dogs with allergies (venison or kangaroo formulas have done well with all of our dogs). We order ours off of PetFlow | Get Started because we can't find it in stores near us. Food allergies are usually to grains, corn, barley, wheat, soy, chicken, turkey, beef, pork, etc.

-Only bath your dog once a month with hypo-allergenic shampoo. You can give a warm water rinse once weekly to help rinse off any potential allergens.

-Talk to your vets about taking your dog to an allergist for proper testing to do away with the problem at hand instead of just treating the symptoms. Take the dog off of any steroids and after a certain amount of wks have past (which your vet should be able to tell you how long you have to wait) then take your dog to an allergist where they can offer you allergy testing (a blood test along with a skin test to get the best results). Once you get the results, you can then begin desensitization shots.
We've looked into this quite a bit but haven't had it done do to lack of funds.

-Wash any bedding the dog is on in only -water and vinegar -water and baking soda or -hypo-allergenic laundry detergent. Avoid bleaches, soaps and scents.

Flea saliva allergy is very common also.
I've heard Comfortis works amazing but have never tried it... we use Frontline Plus which is alright but the fleas still bite.

Your vet might not agree since it will mean you're no longer feeding their prescription diets.

Wow, i didnt know you could get those shots for a dog. My wife is on board with it so, once kody conpletes his 10 days on prednisone we are going back to the vet for a quick checkup and we will go with that route. I akso feel it is better to solve the probkem than to treat the symptoms. :-) Thanks so much!!

You could contact an allergist and let them see your dog and his condition and also provide a history of your dog and the meds he's been on so they can actually let you know the process of how things work and how much it'll all cost (def. not cheap).
Then they'll be able to let you know to wean your dog off of the prednisone, and how long after that you need to wait before getting the testing done.

Change that food asap.... Its no good at all. Get a grain free fish based food.

Personally I think venison is a much better choice.
Our dogs just never did well on fish based foods.

Aww cute little underbiter!! I've only had experience with CA Natural... I really couldn't tell you what's better, all I can tell you is I haven't looked for anything better since switching to this ;)
