How did they really come about. What where they originally bred for?
Can anyone give me a list of articles or proof that this was what they were bred to do.
*And also to all the breeders, what made ya'll choose this breed of dog and what do you guys breed for (hunting, weight pulling, show, etc).

P.s looking for something that wasnt writen by a furmommy (cause thats all I can find lol)

They came from crossing dogs used for bull baiting with terriers. They were bred to fight when bull baiting was outlawed and people moved on to their next sport. The pits I have had have been used to catch hogs.

Isn't she a bad word on here? Noahthestar, there are many different accounts. The thing I've read the most is they come from bull & terrior. The terrior part is confusing because I've never found anything that says what breed of terrior. The bulldog is one now referred to as Olde English Bulldogs, not the English Bulldog of today. Is it accurate? I don't know. Just keep reading, if I run across anything enlightening I'll share it here.

That'll be great, its like everything I find (on the web) starts off with some fur mommy trying to create a new history for the breed.

Didn't say I agreed with the information.Just giving some perspective on how wide ranging the theories can be.

I think the problem here is the history of the breed vs the history of its ancestors. I'm not saying their ancestory isn't important but when we look at the breed itself, the UKC was formed for it and endorsed dog fighting as a means of proving the dogs. So I don't care if the dogs before them were ratters or bull baiters, these dogs are fighters. Bottom line. People can come up with whatever theories they want about the unwritten past.

Thier is no telling what you may find in some of these families.I think they prob started as bull and terrier crosses but I believe other breeds have been added by accident or on purpose who knows.I don't think the same type of terrier was used by every region of Europe .I think what ever Terrier type was getting it done in that particular region was what was more than likely used just my opinion.I also believe once they hit the states and made it to the south I believe hounds was mixed in somehow .Southerners was known to keep hunting hounds and I have saw too many of these bulldogs show hound like features and even saw some that would bay.But no I have no proof I wasn't there and neither were any of you .If you look at some of the DNA samples being sent in from well known and established families you would be shocked at some of the results. Some of the breeds that showed up blew my mind.
