Has anyone had experience doing obedience trials with a unregistered dog? Is it allowed?

Yes. You will have to get an Indefinite Listing Privelege (ILP) number. If it's a Pit Bull you have, there are some things to be aware of on the application. Search the AKC website for the application and see what it involves these days. There have been many ILP Pits registered as ASTs that have done very well in AKC dogsports. Dog MUST be spayed/neutered

Yes! Well, not obedience, but Rally & Agility. My dogs are listed in the Canine Companion Program, as "All American" dogs.
Rosie, mostly Pit, but who knows for sure, earned her RN (rally novice), but hated it, and did quite well in agility, until she retired at age 12.
Frankie (Boxer/Lab?????) has earned her RAE (Rally Advanced Excellent) and is very close to her MACH2 (Master Agility Champion).
It's super easy to enroll a dog in the Canine Companion Program, but, yes, they do need to be altered.
