I know we put that there because it was 95 outside and the concrete was HOT. Either way, Wilson passed & has his CGC & TDI.

What about in Canada? Can you get the CGC through the CKC or AKC, UKC?

Sweet! I am gonna try to do the ADBA one with him too if I can, I couldn't tell if they have to be registered or not in order to do it. My goal is to have him ready for it by fall. He has some issues with dogs so we have been working on his manners when dogs approach us. So far going good!

I haven't read the details of the CGN in awhile.. but I know when I did Jolene's CGC, the woman just made sure I have control of her (because Jolene wanted to eat her little fluffy dog LOL). The dogs aren't allowed to get face to face, so as long as you can show you have control you should be fine :)

I don't know what ADBA one you're talking about though?

I like the original post's info. I don't plan on getting her professionally evaluated but I will integrate these into her training . It's good that y'all have this info on here. These are awesome guidelines for even just owning a dog in general. It gives preplanned goals for new owners! I even wrote them down for our next training session idea list. She's got the sit and down, but pretty far from the stay, LOL! Gotta love the puppy attention span!! We are working on eye contact!

I had posted a question asking ideas and good ways to find dog groups in a local area, i don't know if that thread has low traffic. She got her rabies done today. I am really anxious in exposing her to more things for a happier life ahead of her. I wanna cover everything so that she has little to no stress subjects or things that trigger anxiety or other reactions. We are starting her daily walks in a few days after she bounces back from the shot. ANY POINTERS?? if you want to keep this subject in training, mine is is socializing thread! THANK YOU!

If you have a pup another good test to start off with is the S.T.A.R. PUPPY also offered by AKC. I did this with my Pup Patchronus who passed it at 15 weeks old. :)

I've watched a few YouTube videos of dogs taking (and passing) CGC. I've noticed that in some tests, for the dog-to-dog reaction, the handlers do not shake hands and actually greet each other from 5-10 feet away.

Is this a test option? Is the test just being conducted improperly?

Probably the test being done improperly. I've taken it with all 3 of my dogs and have always had to shake the other persons hand when doing that part of the test.

For those of you who have taken and passed the test, how old were your dogs at the time?

Dakota was just over 2, and we did have to shake hands during the dog-dog part

Sema was 11 months old and we had to shake hands too.

Wilson & Sako had just turned a year, we did their CGC & TDI test at the same time. Piper was.. 13 or 14 months? I can't remember.

Took the test today with both of my dogs.

We had to shake hands but the test giver also encouraged our dogs to say 'hi' during the suppose-to-remain-neutral-to-other-dogs section. :(

Abby is 2 days shy of 15 months and Otis is almost 6 years.

Also, I was told by the evaluator that the AKC is making the CGC a title, not just an 'award'. Info at:

I read that body harness are now allowed for the test. However, no-pull harnesses such as the Easy Walk are not. I heard a couple sources specify this to mean front clip, and that back clip harnesses are okay. Would this include the mesh Sporn?

Again, I've hear conflicting things about the matter.

Rosie has done it twice, the first time she was 4 years, and again at 6 years. Nick was 4 years old.
Frankie took and passed hers last winter at 4 1/2 months.

What was "control" in that context? Was your dog in a sit, but twitching to go at her, or did you have to tug her back a couple times?

  20. It may have already been answered .. if it was i apologize. How much does it cost to go thru the CGC testing?
