a little hedgehog...

don't ask me how, but one of my cats (I believe) brought in a hedgehog. now I'm waiting for 1 or 2 days to see if he got any wounds.
I have to wait close to 30 mins when holding him for him to unroll, but because he's a wild animal, as soon as I move a bit with my hand to quickly check him out, he rolls up again..

my problem is the poor thing is coughing so I'm not sure about putting him outside right now.
but I don't know anything about those mammals...
(what they eat etc, I'm still looking)
I read it could be lungworms or chest infection...
now my biggest consern is that he will probably have to be anestezised (sp? lol) in order to have him checked out...
I know that's quite dangerous with small mammals...

what would the possible treatmet cost?
here's what I found and what meds to use
    http://britishwildlifehelpline.com/medication_guidelines_mammals.html
(scroll down a bit till you hit "lungworms" and "chest infection")

if it's not to severe or doesn't ruin me in meds, I'll probably give it a try before letting him out again...

    any advice/ideas?

Do you not have a department of wildlife or wildlife sanctuary where you are? How about a zoo? Zoos will often take in and rehab wildlife or can at least tell you who to speak with about it.

I don't think we have a wildlife sanctuary close to where I live.
and I don't think zoo's will take them to rehab them, and the zoo is VERY far away...

tomorrow I'll be going to the vet, maybe she could point me out where I could bring him...

it just breaks my heart to hear him cough :(

they are a protected species around here since a couple of years so I'm not really allowed to just take it out of the wild and keep it as a pet.
besides, I don't think he would be happy living in a cage, regardless how big the cage is...
    it just wouldn't feel right...

Watch out, they are usually covered in fleas and the fleas are difficult to see with the spikes. I've never seen one without fleas but might be different where you are as its probably colder.

I know, and he's infested with them! lol
but the cage I use for him is in our spare room where the fleas can't get to the other animals we own ;)

    I found a sanctuary today...
well, let's say my vet found it lol
but anyways, I didn't take any pics as the poor little thing just rolled up everytime I put the light on...
I should have taken just a few tough, she was SO cute!

I managed to pet her several times and even had her unrolled in my hands, sniffing at everything she could, but as soon as she saw light she rolled up again lol

anyways, she was diagnosed with a mild form of lungworms, and with the appropriate treatment she will be just fine and they will be able to release her, but they will keep her for the entire winter and let her hibernate at the sanctuary so she doesn't catch something being put out in the freezing cold when she will be used to have a bit warmer.

I've only had her for one night, but I admit I'll miss her :( lol
anyways, I know she will be happier outside than caged up

    ohh and it's a girl :D
I saw it yesterday when she was rolled up in my hands and unrolled after a couple of minutes.
(poor thing was struggeling to get back on her feet as she was lying on her back lol, she had to take a grip on my fingers :D)
