Default Bond Raised For Man Accused of Setting Dog on Fire In North Dallas

Last Edited: Monday, 02 Jul 2007, 1:56 PM CDT

DALLAS -- A Dallas County judge raised the bond Monday for a man accused of stabbing and setting his pitbull puppy on fire in April of 2006.

Dashawn Brown will remain in custody until he can pay his new bond which was raised from $2500 to $25,000.

Brown had been out of jail since his arrest last year for allegedly abusing his dog.

Police records show that Brown was arrested in Denton County on May 6 for DUI and providing alcohol to a minor. Records show he was also arrested last February for speeding.

He is charged with felony cruelty to animals in the 2006 death of Mercy, a 10-month-old pit bull puppy.

Mercy was discovered bleeding and near death April 14, 2006 behind a North Dallas apartment complex. Veterinarians who examined her said she had been stabbed, doused with gasoline, and set on fire.

Operation Kindness, a no-kill animal shelter in Carrollton, took in Mercy but she died ten days later.

During the same hearing, Operation Kindness was fighting a motion that would force the group to turn over donor names and addresses.

The subpoena given to non-profit shelter requests information about individuals who made donations to the group to help pay for Mercy's veterinary bills, according to Jonnie England, executive director of Operation Kindness.

"We believe that providing the subpoenaed information would be an invasion of privacy of our donors," said England. "In addition, we consider this information irrelevant and immaterial to any issue in the case."

England said the subpoena, issued by defense attorney Dan Wyde, also asks for the names and contact information of anyone who provided leads in the case and who, therefore, could potentially receive a reward.

Operation Kindness, The Humane Society of the United States and two individuals offered an $11,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Mercy's death.

Brown, who lived at the complex at Preston and Beltline, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and use of a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony that could get him 10 years in prison if convicted.

The judge who signed the arrest warrant set bail at $50,000 but the jail magistrate reduced it to $2,500. Brown was released on a $250 cash bond the same day he was arrested and remained out on bail.

Browns jury trial is scheduled to begin Monday, August 6.

Believe me when I tell you that I hope that he will get the maximum sentence the law provides for.

The financial punishment is already quite severe.

Considering that his co-defendents were sentenced to prison terms longer than the prosecution had called for, it appears likely that Mr. Vick will suffer the same fate.

At the same time, it disturbs me to see a new member advocating yet more felonies ...

I'm sorry to have upset you, and not that I would actually do this; however I can't tell you that me and I'm sure several of other people don't feel this way.
I believe that what you do to others should be done to you.
If your nice then you should be treated nicely, If you've done horrible acts to others then someone somewhere should and probably will do it to you.

That is NOT nearly enough punishment for such a terrible crime.
They should be ashamed!

Exclamation Texas Justice for Dashawn Brown

I had read somewhere that Dashawn Brown had also beaten his girlfriend & was the neighborhood bully at the apartment complex that he lived in.
Everyone was afraid of him & never turned him in because they were afraid of him. Just think what Mercy's fate would have been if he had wound up in jail before he did this to her.

Personally, I believe in 1850s justice (being from Texas, y'all) & I think he should be publicly hanged along with cattle rustlers & horse thieves.
