Default Fleas

I know that this topic gets old, but I'm at the end of my rope. My two squirrell dogs are covered in fleas again after I treated them four days ago. There kennel is beside the house under a tree and it does stay a little damp, especially when it rains. Could this be why I can't get rid of them? I honestly don't know what else to do. Help please. I had to just stop in the middle of preparing dinner and go out to put more spray on them. I've used Capstar, Kennel Dip, Flea spray and Bronco gold. They just won't go away and my dogs are in agony. They are staying on top of the dog house crying.

Frontline Plus. And you don't need a prescription. I know they sell it at Petco (probably Peetsmart too) and most vet's offices. I have never hear of it failing.

I have tried the Frontline Plus for at least 8 months at a time and still have them little nasty fleas. Could it be the moisture, if so, we are going to have to move the kennel.

Sorry dumb question maybe but are you sure they are fleas?

If you are sure they are fleas then I think Fronline guarantees so at least you could get that money back.

If not sure, do you have a cooperative extension service or something like that you can take samples to?

They are fleas and when I treat them, thay just start crawling all over and make me itch. The pits that are in the sun don't have them, that's why I'm wondering about the moisture.

I'd move that kennel into the sun. I prefer Advantix over Frontline. I don't recommend any pyrethrin sprays...so, I won't mention any herein. If the Frontline or Advantix doesn't work...there's always the Preventic Collars (amitrax is the active ingredient) and I don't use them because of their carcinogenic potential. Personally, I'd just move that kennel.

if you know for a fact that the kennel is not correctly placed why have you not moved it already and lastly and possibly the most helpfull thing I have ever said to someone with outside dogs is

http://alsnetbiz.com/homeimprovement/boric_acid.html

there is a link on where to get some too at the bottom of the page

she didn't say she "knew" the kennel was placed incorrectly. she "asked" if that could be the problem.

thanks for that link, i have never used that before but will do some research.

Anyway to the topic at hand ... what about consulting a professional exterminator at this point?

Professional extermination isn't a bad idea...but PLEASE remember that alot of them a) don't know if their products are harmful to animals and/or b) don't care.

Before you have the place sprayed, get the active ingredient and call your local poison control and see what symptoms there are listed with the ingredient. If nothing else, you'll know what to look for in your dogs.

Sami

P.S. Look for an active ingredient that only causes easy stuff like vomiting, diarrhea, nausea...if death is listed--I'd personally stay away from that product. Better to have fleas than a dead dog, IMHO.

We have even personally sprayed with malithion and waited for it to dry before putting them back in. And the reason they are where they are is for the shade they have from this huge tree. But if the shade and moisture is the problem, they just going to be some hot little dogs this summer cause we really have nowhere else to put it.

Are you saying that this kennel does not have a roof?...what about the rain?...what about jumping dogs?....I have to say from your posts that your "outdoor setup" does not sound very good to me

Just be careful that everything is okay for the dogs.

I can't begin to tell you how many pets we've seen just this year alone that have come in contact with chemicals that weren't okay for them. BE SURE before you use anything and good luck!!

Fleas are external parasites, living by hematophagy off the blood of mammals and birds and genetic and morphological evidence indicates that they are descendants of the scorpionfly family boreidae which are also flightless; accordingly it is possible that they will eventually be reclassified as a suborder within the mecoptera.

Yes it has a tarp over it that we replace about every six months, and it's 8 foot high. It is also under a shade tree and the ground is dusty. Does that clarify for you?
