Default Fire destroys garage, kills seven puppies

A garage fire in Baraboo resulted in minor injuries for one man and took the lives of seven puppies Saturday morning.

Authorities were called to the scene just before noon to see flames and heavy black smoke coming from the garage on the 200 block of Elm Street, according to a press release from the Baraboo Fire Department.

The fire destroyed the garage and everything in it, including a litter of puppies, and damaged a camper near the garage.

One of the owners, Michael Smith, was taken to St. Clare Hospital by Baraboo District Ambulance Service with minor injuries, according to the release. None of the 23 firefighters who responded was injured.

Baraboo Fire Chief Kevin Stieve called the fire unintentional. And though the exact cause could not be determined, he said a possible malfunction of the wood stove in the garage could not be ruled out.

The Baraboo Police Department assisted with the fire investigation and provided traffic control support.
