Default when females are in heat....

Ok I have a question.....Is it normal for the males to be aggressive when a female is in heat? like for example, if there's a female and the male happens to mount her & you don't want it to happen & you try to take the male off, but he starts to growl at you, is that normal at that time when their in heat??

Why is the male that close to the female if you don't want to breed them? That is an accident waiting to happen. I'd keep them 100% separate. Males can become aggressive around a female in heat. Start crate and rotating these two.

yeah I really never knew that thye can become that aggressive, I took them both to the vet & scheduled the neutering for shdow since he's over 1 yr.old, jinx is still young I wanted to wait a little more, but it get crazy in the house plus I got the 3 kids, it's a disaster, so now I do that crate & rotate, I basically wanted to know if the aggression was normal, I didn't want to mistake that for HA, but yeah everything is pretty good now but I can't stand the whiumpering & the howling on his part, poor jinx is in her glory right now , this jinx very first heat cycle this friday coming show be the end of week 3, week 2 was very hectic, that's when the aggression came in & started to seperate them...but by this week shadow will get his small surgery. Thanks Zoe

Yes it can be. Intact male dogs have an overwhelming instinctual voice telling them to mate with that female asap in an effort to preserve his own genes.

However, it sounds hectic in your house and chances are your male dog could use a bit more obedience lessons......like every day.

The whining WILL drive you batty! Gaud... I'm rotating two boarding males right now and there isn't even an in heat female here and they whine non stop when they're crated. I'm pretty positive this is their first experience with a crate though. Actually, I think they've made me almost immune to it. Is it just me, or are boys major whiners in general!? lol I know Tanks a whiner, then since Arioch been here, he's a whiner, now these two boys? I usually have all bitches. I think I'm sticking to them after this! lol

Oh ya... remember, some females can breed really late in their cycle. My friends bitch was bred on the fourth week after she started her cycle and had a litter of 12. That's not really the norm, but it's always good to be extra safe. Keep them separate until he looses his boys! lol

And remember that even if your boy gets neutered, like, now, there's a chance he can still knock her up this heat cycle. I've heard it said that they can still release sperm for up to a month. Maybe Mia knows about it and can explain better, because from my end its just hearsay.

Something else that came to mind as well, make sure your little ones aren't in a position to be in the way of his need to breed. Not saying in a normal situation he would hurt your kids, but it's always better to be safe then sorry. That instinctual drive to procreate can over ride everything else, and since he already did give you the bizz about stepping into the situation, you want to be extra diligent for their safety.

yeah that's 100%...I already told my boys to just steer clear from him for now, there older so they know what I mean, mydaughter onthe other hand she's 21 months & she always askes for Shadow, that her buddy, they look for each other, so I gotta lock him up cause I don't want any accidents.

Yeah he does cause we call him & there is NO response what so ever right now, usually he's good, but right now, he's unbearable, do you have any lesson that would try to make less hectic in the house?...but could occupy his mind at this moment & take his mind off mating, cause itsn't istinct?....I don't know, my ears are open

Baha, you bring up a very good point. After a male dog is neutered, there is a 2 week period following the surgery that he can still impregnate a female. So you should still keep them apart for a while.

If you want to take the edge off him, work the hell out of him. Jog him, bike him, do some drag work with him, play tug with him, whatever gets him tired. It may not do any good, but the less energy he has, the better.

I did NOT know that! That is good to know... though I never have unaltered dogs of both sexes, it is still handy info!

Yes, I would think the aggression is normal, but that's only in comparrison to humans... ( There I go again , comparing dogs to people. )
