Default Adding another addition

right now i am in the THINKING stage only....

jamie and i were talking and he really wants another dog.. Sonny was technically his dog, while jesse and rufus are mine..

so since jesse is 7, and rufus is 5 1/2 and both are Adult DA, i would need to bring in a puppy for it to work.

now, while i would love to have a pitbull, i cant and wont do a crate/rotate.. if i didnt work, then a crate/rotate would be ok, but since i work, i would prefer a dog that really wasnt DA..

i do NOT want a furry dog.. period... no more long furred walk and shed dogs... jesse is enough for me for that...

i want a short furred dog that is not DA, and would get along with the sea hag and forrest gump here...

the sea hag is dominant, and so is forrest gump here.. soooo, i would need a submissive dog who wouldnt be stupid enough to challenge either of them at maturity..

i was thinking of a dobe or rott, however most people say that same sex aggression with dobes is male to male, and since i have a male i would have to go female,. since i have the sea hag here, i am not too thrilled with another female coming in.
with forrest gump here, i should go with a female dog since he is a male , just to be on the safe side.
if i go with a female dog, i have to find a submissive puppy who wouldnt challenge the pack hiararchy here ...

any other short furred breeds that are not DA that might work LOL?

and this is ONLY in the thinking stage, i told jamie it would take me a long time to find the right dog to fit here, and not to rush me. he said no problem ...

English Bull Terrier!

Actually I waited 6 months for a submissive male. Hence, Dexter!

At one time I had in my house:

2 Male GSDs
1 Male Dobie
1 Male pit bull, and 1 female, Purple

What about a greyhound? They usually calm and polite with other dogs, and grow up to be pretty big and capable.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks could also be a possibility...the Ridgeback owners I've talked to say they're usually pretty good with other dogs, though there are always exceptions. They're bred to be pack hunters, so a strong hierarchy could work with one.

The problem with getting a puppy, though, is you don't KNOW how it's going to turn out to be with other dogs.

What about the Ridgeback, as Bellicosa suggested?

They're bred to be lion hunters, so they are tough, athletic dogs and yes, from everything I've heard they're a pain to obedience train. However, one has achieved an OTCH title, so it's not impossible. They have the typical hound attitude of "what's in it for me?" and "not right now, I'm busy" if there's an interesting scent or sight around.

Scent or sight, yes, because they hunt by both. They're classified as sighthounds, but they also do quite well in tracking. They are definitely working dogs, but they've been described as having an on and off switch...when you want them to go running with you, or take a hike, or go play, they do it. And when you don't, they're giant couch potatoes.

I can't really tell you much more than that, but that's what my own research has told me. I'm pretty sure they're the breed I want to go into when I can afford to seriously show a dog.

A CHIHUAHUA!!! LOL...kidding...But they DO seem to have some weird agreement with otherwise agressive animals..

I was considering adding another too...but the time isn't right, I haven't had enough free time to dedicate to a new member of the house being initiated and Big Girl has DA to the point where I would want to take at least a weeks vacation if I ever did decide to do it. But when I do....I'm really into the American Bulldogs...and I would go for a male pup I think.

A Rottweiler would be my second choice.

Keep us updated...I really want to hear how it goes and what you decide.

I would also say weimaraner, or a rhodisain ridgeback.... Not all weims are neurotic, but they do require lots of exercise. I had one, she was a wonderful dog, I want another one someday, if you have questions about the breed, let me know, I did a lot of research on weims before and while I had Lily. My mother also has a weim. Sadie, her weim has a lot of skin problems, stay away from blues, or other "exotic" colors, stick with the regular shades of gray in that breed. They are smart dogs, very food motivated. My biggest warning with a weimaraner, though, is that they ARE notorious counter surfers. I also had to have industrial strength velcro on my fridge because Lily did figure out how to open it, and enjoyed stealing food. They shed as much as any smooth-coated dogs. Oh, and they can be a little ball-crazy. Ummm....again, a well-bred, trained, and exercised weimaraner is a happy dog, just like any other breed.

Have you ever thought of a foxhound..I don't know why I've always liked their look and they obviously do well with other dogs (I'd think anyway)??

Outside of a scuffle here and there, they never had to be separated!

I will give you this, my Dobie was a SOB! Before I had a fence up, he had a tie out. If you were out in the lawn working, and not paying attention, he would slowly, circle you, until his cable was behind you. And then, yep, you got it, he'd come running full force behind you, and take you at at the knees, from behind, with his cable....I got more stories...lol

My choice would be a Rottweiler. I've found that they tend to do pretty well in groups/packs (of course as long as you don't throw them together and leave them together unattended for 24/7 with no supervision.....but I have an inkling you know all that ).

I must say that Annabelle gets along with pretty much each and every dog I've ever had her around or introduced her to. People not so much, but dogs yes.

And you already know much about the breed and have had experience with one (even if he was a mix). They don't shed as much and are easy to brush.

Rottie would be my vote as well. Ours (Esperanza) gets along with the other two APBTs, and dutifully removes her big self, when either wants the (insert chair/bed/sofa).

On the smaller side, would a Boston Terrier be an option? I have known two, and they were fabulous dogs?
