Default Can someone inform me?

Hello everyone and pitbull chat.com

I just signed up and was browsing through the posts and looking at pictures but I can't seem to find the answer to my specific question. Maybe im not looking hard enough. I've seen post about people asking about getting papers for their pups and what not, most of the time they get flamed for trying to get fake papers etc.. which is good. However im in the same situation some what. I bought my baby bruce =] about 8 months ago, he's 9 months now. Back then I was uneducated and all I knew was that I wanted a pitbull or something of that nature. I found bruce for 250bucks in and ad, went to check it out and thas it, it was decided. Anyways now for the bad part, I never got papers and I doubt the father or mother had papers to be honest. They said the father was an AmStaff and the mum a Brindle, bruce is a big pup so i think that he is more amstaff. I wanted to get papers for my pup not to breed him but because a few people told me in order to weight pull in competitions and shows etc I have to have papers. Maybe you can shed more light on this topic for me? I have no intention in having bruce breed or anything, he is more than enough pup for me and thas all i want. I might post pictures in the other section later so you guys can see him =]. Is their a way to enter competitions and events without papers or some sort of temp registration or registration for competitions? Oh and one more question, I read in the other weight pulling post to start endurance training and getting them used to a harness around 7/8 months however on other forums I read you shouldn't weight pull or play aggressive games (tug of war etc) with your pup till their at least 12+ months to prevent from bone structure damage and issues of dominance?

Any information would be helpful, thank you.

Alot of questions for one thread, but here goes...

call it a lesson learned...the first time out you did support a back yard breeder, but please don't make this mistake again. If there is no intention to breed your dog ensure that you're looking at getting him fixed. While it is possible to get papers on your dog, but papers from the registeries that will register him as an APBT are not worth the paper their printed on IMO...

That being said it is not true that you have to have papers in order for your dog to compete in weight pull. There are registries that host weight pulls (ABDA, AADR, and UKC) but this is not the full extent of weight pull in our country. There are several fun pulls, and all breed organizations. Look into the United Pulling Federation (http://www.freewebs.com/upfsite/), the American Pulling Alliance (http://www.weightpull.com/), and the International Weight Pull Association (http://www.iwpa.net/)

IMO it is fine to start getting a pup used to a harness, and used to pulling very lightweights (less than 5 lbs.) at about 9 mos without any issues and then slowly progress after 12 mos. He is old enough to do some running, and some flirtpole work regularly at 8 mos, but just be patient and take it easy. He's not conditioning so to speak at that age, but instead laying a foundation so that he knows how to work. I hope this info is helpful.

yea that was alot of questions but you are very helpful thank you! i'll look into the links you gave me. Yea when i bought the puppy I didn't no anything but that being said i still wouldn't give up bruce for the world although i don't support backyard breeders. But tbh i could care less about papers if i dont need them =]. Now i just gotta find some shows and events in cali.

Just so you know, Brindle is not a breed, it's the coloring.

And here's a good article on Amstaff vs. APBT vs. other bullies

http://www.pbrc.net/faq.html

At any rate, unless you were planning to end up at Westminster, you really don't need papers, so don't sweat it!

Since you don't plan to breed, is your boy fixed yet?

I know the ABDA allows a limited registration if you have a dog that looks pretty definitely like a Pit but you don't have papers on it. The UKC does as well, and if he looks like an AmStaff you may be in luck with the AKC. What these limited registrations have in common is that you must prove that the dog is neutered, you must provide pictures of him in various positions so they can look at the resemblance, and you cannot show him in the breed ring. That's conformation; what you see at Westminster. You can, however, show him in performance events (obedience, agility, weight pull, etc).

If for some reason you can't get or don't want a limited registration, the UKC also accepts spayed and neutered mixed breed dogs at their performance events. This is my plan of attack as well for my puppy Arthur...try to get a limited registration, depending on how close to the standard he looks when he grows up (he's a rescued backyard breeder pit, so he might not resemble a pedigreed Pit very much), then show as a UKC mixed breed if that doesn't work.

Good advice has already been posted.

The people who get flamed asking for papers are those who want them just to breed dogs of unknown heritage...your situation is very different.

Having Hung papers and getting an LP are not even close to being the same thing

Good luck in whatever you decide.

To get an LP all the guidelines are up on the reg site. If you don't understand something post and we'll be more than happy to help

yea he just got neutered, sorry i haven't replied in a while but alot has happened and know i dont think i'll need papers anymore =[ A couple weeks ago bruce got outside and ran around the neighborhood for about 10 mins or so. It seems my parents forgot to close the back gate. So the pup just wondered around the vicinity of my front yard. I guess my neighbor saw my dog out (I wasn't home yet) and when I came home a few mins later he started yelling about how he hates dogs and 'his people' don't like dogs etc. etc. etc. anyways, after I got my dog back and put him in the backyard. He went over to my parents and complained about how the dog scared him and his family and that they felt threatened and that he would file a lawsuit on my family. My dad freaked out and know bruce is staying at a friends house until I buy my house in a couple of months. I believe the guy is doing it out of spite towards my family because a few months earlier he did a 'hit and run' on our car and we filed a police report so yea.... anyways thanks for all the information from everyone and if anyone thinks they have any advice for me about this it would be greatly appreciated. I'll post this in a different section

Man, i know he did it out of spite and it makes me so mad knowing that its unfair how they can just accuse a breed and now my parents are scared to death thinking their gonna get sued because we had a bully breed and he did nothing to the other guy, he sat on the lawn the whole time from what our other neighbor says, THE GUY HAS NOT ONE SINGLE SCRATCH ON HIM! sighs, some people are sooooooo -censors himself-

I wouldn't worry too much about a lawsuit. He probably just said it to scare you; most people won't spend the money on a suit that they can't prove damages from. It's not like you make a habit of letting him run loose, and you have a witness to back up your version of the story. And like you said...not a scratch on the guy.

I'm not sure what you are worried about. You can't sue someone because you looked at their dog. I'm assuming the dog did no damage, correct? Are you in a BSL area? If yes and no, then let the guy say whatever he wants. You can't sue for that, it will get thrown out of court, if he's even lucky to find a lawyer bored and stupid enough to take that case on.
