Default Allergies?

Ok, so I am wondering if it is possible for dogs to have skin allergies that come about during seasonal changes. Bentley seems to get little rashes on his belly and legs in the spring and summer. There are no fleas, or bites, just looks a a bit like a heat rash like we would get. He's fine in the fall and winter, but the spring and summer he gets them occasionally. Just wondering if he could maybe have an allergy to something and would Benadryl help this? Thanks in advance!

yep, he can have seasonal allergies.. my gsd has allergies.. it sucks..
benadryl works, but you also have to take a cold cloth and wipe the pollen and grass off his belly too.. not warm, as warm opens the pores, but a cold cloth to keep the pores closed...

I have some Malaseb shampoo. Gonna bathe him tomorrow and start with some Benadryl, and start with the wiping of his belly. Thanks again for the help again.

Dexter is allergic to grasses and trees, so his allergies are seasonal. He's also allergic to human dander.
We had him tested, and he is on an allergy shot regimen. I give him a shot once a month now.

Mike has Allergies and they seem to be worse in the spring.

I have him on Chlorpheniramine(4mg) tablets. Only when needed. You can buy them at Wal Mart $2.50 for 100 pills. They have worked better for me than Benedryl.

It all depends on what they are allergic to. Inhaled allergies seem to be harder to control.

Are they chewing at their feet? Ear infections can be secondary to allergies as well.

You also can use a tapering prednisone dose to help but steriods should be the last resort. It all depends on how bad it is. You might need that initial hep then put them on a antihistamine to control.

Their is 2 steriod injections available Vetalog is shorter lasting steriod and Depo Medrol is longer.

I did have to give Mike a Depo shot in Dec then I started giving him Chlorpheniramine every other day to let it build up in his system so when spring came I only have to give it to him when needed.

It worked for me. Last yr in the spring time he had rashes, ear infections. This year all I saw was runny eyes a couple times.

The dosage for Chlorpheniramine is .5 - 1 mg/kg every 8-12hrs

Ceaser and Queen both have seasonal allergies. I give Ceaser Benedryl for his and Queen get a rash on her belly. After everytime Queen comes in I wipe her with a baby wipe. It seems to help.

It all depends on how severe the allergies are. Allergies in dogs are the same as in humans. And it all depends on the individual.

Allergies are very tricky and I hope it works out for you. Goodluck.:crossfingers:

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it. I didnt get to bathe him today like I wanted to. I dont know what the deal was, I was just exhausted. I'm gonna go by Wal Mart tomorrow and try the Chlorpheniramine and see how he does with that. No he is not chewing his feet and his ears look fine. Its just his belly. I always keep an eye for infection as he has had a bad staph infection 2 years ago. Thanks again all. I really appreciate your advice and opinions. I'll keep you all posted.

I have also noticed that white dogs are more sensitive because of the lack of pigment. China gets a red rash on her Belly a lot too. And the solid white dog next door, she don't stand a chance. Her moma is always calling me to come over and look at something on her, but she never listens.

Yea last year at spring - early summer Mike was really bad. He would come in from outside and his whole belly was red and inflammed. It got so bad that he did have a secondary staph infection. So thats why I was prepared for this spring.

I did only bathe him once a month because it can dry out their skin if you bathe to much. And when I did I bathed him in a relief shampoo. Oatmeal based.

So I know how you feel. You could try a Food Trial. Feed something that they never been introduced to ie... protien carb source. What I have been told is that their body can take alot then when it become inhalent allergy season one thing can through their body out of wack.

But sometimes just the antihistomine can help relieve it. Like I said Goodluck

The problem with allergies it is a hit and miss type of thing.

I found a lifesaver!!! Nettle powder. Winston has pretty bad seasonal allergies. I have tried everything, benadryl, antiobiotics(to get rid of secondary infection), and genta spray.

a friend mentioned that she had her dog that was so bad he was on steriods now on nettle and she was able to take him off the steroids! I started using it on winston about a week ago and the results have been great!

He would scratch himself raw and get little scabs. The first thing I noticed is that the scabs started going away. He was still itching but his skin looked way better and there was no scabbing. Now, I have started noticed the itching go down as well, so I expect as he continues taking it he will continue to improve. You can do a google search on it. It has anti histamine and anti-inflammatory properties. I am even thinking about trying to get my girl with a bad leg off rimadyl and on nettle because it is supposedly great for that as well.

This is the kind I ordered:
http://www.iherb.com/store/ProductDe...&pid=NWY-15150

He is 50 lbs and I give him a pill twice a day. You really should try it! It is cheap too.

Unhappy

My dog has a weird bumpy rash on her belly. some of these bumps gathered in a round inch wide hairless patch. I hope that hair loss is because she was scratching really bad...
I bought her hydrocortisone lotion, used only once.

Axl gets outbreaks at the beginning of spring from something in my backyard. I've got some allergy medicine from my vet whenever it happens.

Another thing you can try too is Micro-tek shampoo (made by Eqyss). It can be used once a wk. without drying out the skin. They also have a spray that you can use between baths. I swear by this stuff...it's a really good product.

I know someone that had the atopic allergy test done. They test for something like 60-100 different allergens, just like on a human, by pricking the skin with the allergen and looking for the result.

I imagine it's pricey but maybe it's something that could be avoided.

Also, for any dog that's having any type of allergic reaction, getting them off all grains is a good idea. Not just corn, all grains.
