So, I called the Vet today to schedule an appt. to get Tess fixed, and they said it is going to cost $202.00 if she is under 50 lbs. and $288.00 if she is over 50lbs. I did a quick me on the scale, then her in my arms on the scale and she was 46lbs...Anyway, those of you who work for vets. Is this the normal going rate to get a dog fixed? It seems a bit steep to me... Hope you can help me out, I plan on calling a bunch of different vets tomorrow and seeing if I can find it any cheaper, but that is quite a punch in the pocketbook. If this was a life or death thing, then I'd be happy to pay it, but being something that is just convenience, more than anything, it doesn't seem worth the money.

you can try the local shelters ,see what they charge, and there is www.foa.org (Friends of Animals) they have vouchers that you pay for, its around $75 for females...but it only covers the spay.

Did you ask what is included in those prices? There are things that are optional that a lot of places just do and add to the bill without asking. Bloodwork is probably a big chunk of that price. It's not necessary (thought, it's important) and IV fluids are not necessary (but are better supportive care). Our office offers 2 different packages A) anesthesia and the surgery for about $90 (no matter how big the dog is) and B) A + a lot of additional supportive care and is about $250.00.

I called around a bunch of places today, and found it for a lot cheaper everywhere I called. I believe I am going to go with the Humane Society, because they only charge $67.00, which is more in my budget for something like this...Unless you guys have a really good reason, not to go with them. If you do, I'll go with the second cheapest, which was $110.00. Thanks for all your help! ![]()

I paid $69 to have my dog neutered at Indian Ridge Vet Clinic. He has done just fine.

yay for calling around! Lots of people surrender their animals at my shelter because they are pregnant or were pregnant and they could not afford the spay. When I asked them what research they did they claim they called ONE vet, got a quote and then that was that. Calling around is def. worth your time!

When Loki got snipped in 2004, I paid $150, and that included pre-op bloodwork. Since then, I've heard prices all over the board. $300 for a little cat at a vet hospital. $45 for a big dog at the local spay/neuter clinic. __________________ *** Lindsay "I don't want to waste another day stuck in the shadow of my mistakes."

I called all the vet clinics in my area, I have used Indian Ridge for years but wanted to compare prices. They ran from $69 all the way up to over $300 dollars. Most however were around $99.

When Lugz goes on March 12th to one of our local clinics (where I had Yukon spayed 9 years ago), it is going to be right at $65 depending on his weight at the time.

We (my daughter) paid $20 going thru a local spay/neuter program. They just required he be up to date on his shots, which he was. It was at a vet's office in a BSL city. They treated him like a king.

Patch, for the love of humanity, MOVE!!!!I'd hate to see what the cost of living is in your area if the vets are that expensive. Holy schnikeys! __________________ Let us conduct ourselves in a way we'll all be proud of tomorrow.

Dog neuters are $60 regardless of size. An IV port is put into place, but the dog is not hooked up to fluids as the surgery takes very little time and is not invasive. Dogs go home the same day after 5 pm. Dog spays depend on the size of the bitch. The most expensive is $150. An IV is started and the dog remains on fluids throughout the procedure as it is much more invasive. Bitches remain overnight for observation and go home the next day. Cat neuters are $35 and take approx. 5 minutes from the time the cat is knocked out until the last suture is in place. Cat spays are $50. Bloodwork is NOT included in these prices as it's an optional procedure. If you choose to have bloodwork done, add an additional $45 to the price.

That price is actually average to low even. It will be so worth it to pay a little extra for the bloodwork and IV fluids. I would definitely recommend it. I worked for one vet who charged in the 100s to low 200s and it was a rushed procedure, whereas I work for a different practice now who charges 300-400 + for a spay but they definitely go the extra mile. It is a more detailed bloodwork panel and every surgery gets a catheter and fluids. The blood pressure, resp rate, etc etc is monitored every 5 minutes during the procedure. Just make sure you ask exactly how their procedure takes place and get as many details as possible.
