Default Dog itch ?

My pup just wont stop itching. He had a bout with a bald spot which was demondex mites but with ointment that went away. He was still itching all over so I changed his food to all protein no grains or fillers. Still itching. What else might it be or can demondex still be there but not causing bald spots. Oh yes one more thing can humans get those mites? Sugesstions needed. I have added garlic and olive oil to his food and flax for the omega-3's. Vets next if I can't help here at home.

Demodex is not contagious to humans.

Take a look at this link, it was a very informative thread:

How long has your dog been on the grain free food and the supplements?

has your dog been cleared of the demodex mites yet? if not, they could still be there, it takes a while for the demodex mites to die once treated.

Always do a follow up skin scrape after ending treatment.

My guess is that the problem has not been temporarily solved.

I'll try to answer all the questions. He has been on the new food and supplements for two months. I never had a follow up scrape so I will definately do that but he is itching at his tail base and the original site was on the back of his head. He has no balding anywhere else but seems to itch everywhere. I thought it my be dry skin so we bathed him with a skin conditioning shampoo and I have a spray comdition for hot spots that seems to work on a tep basis but the itching comes right back. I guess I need to call the vet. One more question when does a male start to lift his leg to pee. My little man is almost 8 months old and is squatting and peeing on his own feet, doesnt seem to care about it. Never having a male before I wasnt sure of the age.

you cant stop the demodex treatment until the mites are gone, which might take a few times.. most vets will scrape once a month during treatment to see if the mites are dying, and then scrape a month or two after treatment stopped to make sure.

it sounds to me that your vet didnt do enough treatment for the mange...

as far as lifting his leg, if he doesnt see another male dog doing it he might never lift his leg.. some do and some dont, some do both..

It's me again . I went to the thread about this apparently well discussed. It was mentioned that there is a smell. I call it the "frito " smell, is that what you mean becasue he smells like that alot within 2/3 days of a bath. Again, he has no hair loss at all, is demondex (I mispelled it the first time but now I like the spelling it is so fitting) possible with hairloss or is this some other skin disease . I feel so bad for him. I made him an appt. for this afternoon so I hope I know more then. Ill let you know . Thanks for helping.

Demodex is often accompanied by a bacterial or fungal skin infection. That "frito" smell is often yeast.

The vet is your best choice here.

Thanks again everyone for getting to me so quickly. Worried about the mange thing being harmful I went ahead and took him to the vet. $112.00 dollars later we think it is yeast. He took sereravl scrapings from different places he was itchy but found no "demondex" so he gave me and antihistimine and something for the yeast. Thought he was beautiful and in great shape. I talked with him about the nuetering and we decided to give him a few more months but then we will do it. He's 7.5 months and 62 lbs. We want him to get the most growth he can get. Thanks again.
