He always and i mean always when i say that, comes to me when i say "come" when we are inside of my house. Even if i am down stairs and he is upstairs laying on the couch lol. And i dont even give him a treat when he comes inside, just praise. Well actaully i do give him treats some times when he comes, but not that often. But if we go outside and i say come from about 20 feet away some times he does not listen. Only about 2/5 times he will listen. I guess i need to start bringing treats with me outside when and practice the come command when we are outside. Anyone else ever have a similar type of problem before?

Too many distractions outside, what are you calling him for, Bath? come inside stop his fun he's having? and everytime you say come and he doesn't he is thinking it's an option. This is what I tell my class..in a nut shell... Come: This word could save your dogs life one day. Never use the word come for anything the dog perceives as bad or non rewarding to him. This word should be kept in a locked box and only used when you know you will be 100% successful. Teach them come is a good thing, it will never be used for anything the DOG perceives as bad and you give them a jackpot every single time, and only practice ON LEAD, if they don't come to you? why? are you not as exciting as the squirrel or bird? get more exciting, make them move towards you, the lead is only on them to keep them from going away and leaving you standing there, it is NOT to reel them in like a fish, that would be bad pulling and dragging them back towards you. Practice this in a distraction free zone and have a jackpot (more than 3) of treats ready. With your dog on leash, call their name 1 time and when they look to you, encourage them to move towards you (you can backup fast also if you want more distance), when they do, say the word "come" one time. They must be "in the act" of moving towards you for you to use the come word. When they get to you praise them and give them those treats one at a time (not all at once, the dog sees that as 1 treat, they do not count with their tongue). You can also practice this down your hallway, and play a recall game with another person. You both need to have a jackpot of treats and take turns calling the dog to come when they are in the act of moving towards you. Only do this about 4-5 times or the dog will start anticipating your name calling and just start going back and forth with no name calling just to get the treats. Stop so they want more later. Different things you can do to get your dog to you without saying come, when you know you have no control over them, (on a leash or long line, under your control). 1. One way is to make it a chase game, get their attention and make loud happy, exciting noises and run away from them. Encourage them to follow you. 2. When they aren’t paying attention go behind a tree and let them find you, (this works well with dogs who don’t want you out of their sight). 3.Get on the ground and pretend that you have found the most interesting blade of grass you’ve ever seen, making lots of exciting noises, treat them when they come to investigate. 4. If they respond to the treat can or a whistle, use it and treat when they move towards you. These work well most of the time, just never use them all the time to get your dog to stop having fun or putting him away or anything he thinks is no fun. Make it random, sometimes just get them to you then let them "go play" again. This way they never know when their activity will end. 5.If they love to get in the car use it as a enticement to come to you and go for a ride, if you do this you must take them for a ride, at least around the block. 6. Use a squeaky toy if they like them. Have a couple with you, make it a fun game of take it and get them to play with you. Come cue word: Just remember to say their name only 1 time and the come command 1 time, do not keep repeating it over and over they will start tuning it out. Also if you say come when you have no control on them in the beginning they will not learn to come to you, something distracting can come along and ruin all your practice. Hope that helps. ![]() __________________ "Training is an Investment in your dog, if you're not willing to invest, get a stuffed animal" Drgnrdr (All views, tips, advice and opinions are drgnrdr's only)

Jelet, your pup is 12 weeks old, cut him some slack Everything is new and distracting outside, sounds, smells, sights, etc. He's discovering his world, let him explore, there's plenty time for obedience training. Just make sure he can't wiggle through any holes in the fence ![]() __________________ "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for I am the baddest dog in the valley" Psalm 23:4 - Bulldog Translation ![]()

| You know what I find works great for many pups. I crouch down, and if the dog is submissive, I don't face them straight on, I turn to the side, and then call them all excited. That crouching down to their level works wonders. I always make sure I have a REALLY special treat and extra love to give them when they come runnin'! __________________ I've closed my circle. | just remember Jelet, he has the attention span of a gnat at this age, so dont expect too much, let him have fun as a puppy, and dont worry, he will learn as he gets older.. |

Question- I do find myself saying my dogs name over and over again. I know that this is probably just desensitizing her to my voice, so I try to clap or whistle to catch her attention, but sometimes when she is mid-sniff it's impossible to just get her to look at me! Anything that is realllly good for getting a dogs attention?
