| This is an embarrassing question for me to ask. Rowdy has a light/pale lime green colored secretion. Is this something I need to be concerned about or is it normal? It is not present at ALL times of course. I have noticed the odd colored (to me) secretion since I have had him now for 7 months. I have to ask, because it has been since I was a child that I had a male dog and I just don’t know/remember if it is a normal color/condition or not. Rowdy has a habit of eating grass, for some reason, especially in the morning. Sugar munches on grass too, but not as often as Rowdy. I feed Canidae All Life Stages kibble. Rowdy and Sugar also get some raw chicken and raw eggs weekly. ![]() |

| But, I wondered about the color of it. I am concerned if the color may be an indication of a urinary infection or something. |

If it was urinary infection, the dog would be tinkling alot, like every 5 minutes or so. But i'm not a vet. I'm going by when my JC had them. JC no longer gets them. DivineOblivion had given him a supplement and it worked great. I forgot the name of it.... |

Surely there are plenty of folks here with intact male dogs that can tell me if it is a normal color or not. Hey, mine aint GREEN. I just don't know if it is normal for a dog or not. His bowel and urinary functions are normal. |

| Smegma, baby! ![]() And yes, it's completely normal. It's the lubricant that keeps his penis from adhering to the sheath. ![]() EDIT: I wanted to mention that the normal color can range from opaque white to that green color. But as usual, just keep an eye on him for frequent urination or other urinary problems. Also, if you start to notice a disgusting smell from that area, then it's time to see the vet. | I've noticed a discharge from my male puppy. I think when they get the "red rocket" it stretches the hole and some discharge may come out. I think it's pretty natural for the most part due to healing of the newly enlarged hole. Hope this doesn't sound too x-rated. I've noticed the same thing with two males I've had in the past but it was never green. Mine had a yellowish/pussy color disharge. It normally goes away after time but if it doesn't contact your vet to get him in for an appt. |

| No! It's educational! Honestly, we've noticed the same thing on Debo (although he's fixed) & wondered what the deal was . . . so now I know. And is 'smegma' the medical term??? |

![]() In all honestly, this is one of the most frequently asked qustions I answer. And most people don't ever notice it due to the fact that dogs love to clean themselves constantly. And yes, "smegma" is the medical term. Now, behind the scenes in the back of the clinic where no one can hear us, well.....that's a whole other story. ![]() |

| Smegma is normal as was already mentioned, and lubricates so that there is no sticking between the penis and sheath as was already mentioned I just wanted to be seen in this thread...LMAO Seriously, the reason why alot of people never noticed this is because the dog will usually groom the exces away, and it will never become an issue. |
