Question doggie bath

I usually bathe my dog once every month and a half, and while I had been using doggie shampoo, yesterday I tried johnson and johnson no tears baby shampoo. Is this a good idea? he smells wonderful, and has no flaking, which is always a consequence of dog shampoo. and is once every month and half too often or not often enough for bathing my dog?

I would not recommend human shampoo to be used on dogs. There's different ingredients in human shampoo that's not meant for dogs.

As far as how much to bathe the dog, I personally think you are bathing too much which is why the skin may be flaky.

I only use dog shampoo on mine. Have never tried the baby shampoo. But we only bathe ours when they need it which might be around 3-4 months. If they get muddy I wipe them off with a towel, baby wipes, wet washcloth, etc. and they are good to go.

I wash Bridget when she looses her "Cute Pit Bull Smell" as my daughters call it :-) It depends how often that is, it can be six weeks or it can be five months. I started years ago using Loreal for kids on my Austalian Shepard because it was gentle, had a light conditioner for his looooong hair and smelled so great. MacKenzie is no longer with me :-( I lost him last year to liver cancer, but I still use it on his little sister.

A belated welcome to you!

I personally like Buddy Wash (a dog shampoo) and its conditioner.

Nice Lavender fragrance and very gentle.

Personally, I would not use human shampoo for my dogs.

Human shampoo isn't as gentle as dog shampoo, and you may not notice right away, but the more you use it, the more you will notice your dog's skin and coat is not healthy. It is generally recommended to give a dog a bath with shampoo and conditioner about once every 4-5 weeks. If you use the right products, you won't dry your dog out!

When I first got JC, I used to bathe him in J&J Baby Shampoo. At first, there was no problem. Then, he got very bad dry skin from it. I ended up getting a medicated shampoo from the vet and it cleared up.

I guess I will go back to dog shampoo, except for his head I'll still use J&J. I have to bathe him at least every month and a half though, because he is an inside dog, and I can't have a stinky dog cuddling with me at night. Bridgets Mom I am sorry to hear about Mackenzie, I have a 17 year old schnauzer (sp?) I don't know what I will do without her when she goes.

why are you going to still use the J&J on his head? If it is because J&J is tearless, use tearless dog shampoo....most high quality shampoos are.

I'm not sure where to get "high-quality" dog shampoo, I live in a small town in Oklahoma, there really arent alot of options here, its either use seargent or Hartz, i doubt if this qualifies as "high-quality"

Some good places online are:
carealotpets.com
petedge.com
dog.com

I recommend the Tropiclean and Biogroom brands. My personal favorite is the Tropiclean Oxy-Med shampoo and creme rinse, I wrote a review for it in the review section!

You know, i tested this tearless baby shampoo, I put it in my own eye, and, let me tell you- it is far from tearless! I did check out the ingredients, while gentile, they still burn like no other! So wether a shampoo has tearless on it or not, I recommend not risking it near a dogs eyes, they may not complain, but i guarantee it burns! My dogs already forgotten about his nightmare bath, but if even baby shampoo that claims to be harmless hurt my eyes, tearless seems a sham. While dogs cant produce pure tears, its not worth knowing your pet may be silently suffering while you scrub him down, I am going to stick to grooming sprays sprayed onto a dog brush to de-stink my baby's face.

Yay!!! someone discovered it on their own, because no one usually listens to me when I tell them this: all a tearless shampoo is for babies is, it either a very diluted shampoo, or some of them even have a drug in them to make your eye numb. Most high quality dog shampoos are very gentle and mild to begin with, and that is why they are able to say tearless. Honestly, if you are worried about it, you can buy eye drops, to wash out the eyes after you are done with the bath. I've worked at salons that didn't use them, and one that requires us to after every bath and groom.

Oh, let me add, quick, when I was grooming, when I would wash faces, I would be careful not to get any soap in the eyes, and I found a great way to wash faces, that I can't really explain, maybe next time I bathe one of my mom's dogs, which I am sure I will do before I go back, I can get a quick video of the face. Also, when I washed the faces of smaller, more smushed faces, I used a towel as a wash cloth with the shampoo, and rinse it off afterwards too. Hmmmm.....I should also add: MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL SHAMPOO OFF YOUR DOG WHEN YOU BATHE IT TOO!!!!! That is the most common mistake made by people bathing their dogs at home, and then their dog is itchy and they don't understand why....

My best friend is a vet and we were at his property last night setting up camp. He has a Chocolate Lab vs my ABPT...Diesel is now 5 1/2 months old and I have never given him a bath...his coat is shiny and even his white areas are clean...does not smell. My vet was almost knocked to the floor when after he mentioned it was time to bathe his dog again (every two weeks at least) and I said I have never bathed Diesel. His girlfriend (who is a bit anal) was just flabergasted! I told them he is clean and does not smell...funny thing thier dog was smelling pretty ripe. Of course thier dog has long hair and mine is short...they still insisted I need to bathe him every two weeks minimum. I didn't argue with them because I know they mean the best...but Diesel is still not getting one till HE NEEDS it.

How to bathe your dog:

1. Buy a small jar of mineral oil and a medicine dropper. Put one drop of mineral in each eye as it will protect the eyes in case any shampoo gets in them. Do this no matter which type of shampoo you use.

2. Buy some cotton balls. Put one cotton ball into each ear. This will help from water getting down into the ear canal.

3. Wet the dog thoroughly from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail (& the bottom of the paws ).

4. Take your shampoo and squirt a line from the shoulders to the rump. Thoroughly massage in the shampoo making sure to clean areas such as under the tail and in between each & every toe. Use this time also to check your dog out for any lumps, bumps, or scrapes.

5. Take a very small amount of shampoo and wash your dogs head and neck. Do the same check for lumps and bumps.

6. Massage the dog well for 5 minutes and try to keep him from jumping out of or dragging you into the tub.

NOTE: For medicated shampoos to work, they must stay on the dog for approx. 5 minutes! Any less time and you are not giving it time to do it's job.

7. Starting with the head, rinse the dog thoroughly. This means go over the dog again and again and again until the runoff water is completely clear. Once it is, rinse again.

8. Take the cotton balls out of the dog's ears and, using new & dry cotton balls, wipe the inside of the ears out.

9. Get the dog out of the tub and DRY WELL. However, I do not recommend blow dryers for dogs with skin issues as it will only exasperate the condition. And if need be, protect your furniture as he will choose to dry himself off on it by rubbing all over it.

IMO: Every groomer I have talked to says Dogs have a diff PH balance than we do, they also do not sweat thru their skin, so anything going on them gets absorbed and it can throw the balance off, had a dog come in to a vet once and it had a heartattack, vet found out lady had been washing him with human shampoo every week, for months. So I don't reccommend human shampoo at all.
Your dog may not have nothing happen, or accumalative effects on them can cause al kinds of bad things, maybe cancers or organ problems...I don't want to risk and see if Argo can handle human shampoo or not.
