Some males wont hike their leg until they learn it from another male. If you're talking about "rising" his leg as in pawing at the door to let you know he needs to go potty, you'll probably have to teach him that.

Hawken and Left Foot are about 7 months old, and don't hike their legs. Though Hawken has once or twice, he went back to the "lazy" way. lol...I'm sure they'll do it eventually, no worries.

JC squats inside and lifts his leg outside Although, one time I put my garbage by the door to take out. JC walked over, hiked up his leg and peed on it. I was not too happy.

my 13 year old male does both, sometimes he squats, sometimes he lifts his leg. my 5 year old male never lifted his leg until he watched my older dog do it, then he kept watching him and has been lifting his leg since 1 year old..

It's an individual dog thing. I've got 2 intact males that rarely if ever raise their leg. Shaker used to squat so low to the ground to pee you would've thought he was a female.

On the other hand, I've had neutered males that always lifted their leg to pee....and mark every blade of grass in the yard.

Like someone said, don't worry about it because it's no big deal. Who cares.

9 months is when my pup started doing it.

The bottom line is that he is eliminating urine. As long as their are no blockage issues that he needs vet intervention for...its no big deal whether he squats, or lifts his leg to mark.
