Default Advice needed..introducing dogs

At one time I had three dogs my Rottie had to be put down after 12 years.

Now I just have Samson and Lady.

They have been around other dogs all kinds, never have been in a fight, except very yard territorial and I had some strays last year come up through the wooden gate and well, they all went at each other through the fence but I talked to the neighbors of the dogs, and we dont have that issue anymore.

NOW. (just giving you a little history on my dogs)

My in laws.. oh...sigh.

They have Canes Terriers and a Golden and one Terrier Chopper who is such a good dog, they want to get rid of like now. OH, you know why?

Because he pees on things out side they dont want him to pee on, and he pees in his water bowl . No pissing in the house, doesnt chew things up either. HE IS A DAMN GOOD DOG I LOVE HIM.

So does my God child ...

I found out today that the REAL REASON for getting rid of this dog is because they want another Golden they got this dog for breeding and he did help in that now they want to just get rid of him.

They asked US, my husband and I.

The dogs name is Chopper he already lives with five other dogs and is a charm we have Samson and Lady.

My dogs have been good around other dogs even small dogs but hate cats, its been a while for me, I do like this dog Chopper a lot I would like to try to see if it can work so does my husband however, I would like to ask advice from you all on introducing dogs.

Now, I did tell my mother in law who has major issues with them getting rid of this dog, to see if they can take Chopper first as they have a Terrier named COCO and she does need a playmate but my father in law is weird and I dont know if they will do it yet.

I have seen lots of pit bulls and owners with little dogs, I have not had a little dog in ages, please give me advice on introducing.

One thing about me is Im dedicated to all my pets, I spend that time, I think where there is a will there is a way and am open to anything.

Thanks, will check back in later,

Renee'

I,m no expert, but have always heard to introduce them on neutral ground, not his, not thiers. We had China for 3 years before we got Tinker and there were some issues with the food bowls at first and China bit Tinker. Now she will let Tinker eat out of her bowl, If she's not eating and Tinker knows not to go there if she is. Just a lot of careful watching and letting them know what's acceptable.

Thanks apparently Im not as out of touch as I thought I was, as that was my plan, to introduce them off their own grounds.

Like taking them for walks, at a quiet park near my mother in laws house for a bit before the actual move in. I have seen it done all the time I have seen pics of pit bulls and little Chi chis, my husband is all for it but worries about Chopper being so little but I told him its been done.

We both want Chopper, we are willing to take the time and we love our dogs and I do have parrots, ducks and other birds, Samson and Lady are "eh" when it comes to them.

Again, I have been dedicated to my dogs for eight years now or longer and we want this little guy.

My husband one time a year ago, let Samson out accidentally and the neighbors little dog was out, Samson saw him, and ran after him but not like stalking, like just a gallop and wasnt out to maul him.

The little shit though ran like hell though as my husband thought he never saw a big dog before and Lady well, she is an old maid and dont give two thoughts about anything anymore.

Another words, we both feel our dogs would work with this but I still trust in my dog bretheren to ask such advice, thanks China and I will let you all know about it.

Im waiting for my mother in law to call me to see if they are going to try to take the Chopster.

yea, introduce them on neutral territory. Also, the dogs are going to have to go through that "alpha role" thing. They will have to figure out if the present alpha will stay that way or will the pack change roles now that a new dog is coming into the picture. Unless they start ripping each other apart, I would let the dogs figure it out on their own.....

Great topic...I'm looking forward to advice as well...my friend has two very territorial & agressive chihuahuas and am going to be staying with her for a month and we have to figure out how to get them to get along with Paco (who is super submissive so I have my fingers crossed). We were planning on doing the neutral ground thing and slowly walking back to the house to see if they will allow it, but to tell you the truth if they bite my baby I'll be pissed...one of them bit me so hard I still have a scar..If we can't make it work...I have to have a Plan B..which I currently don't have

Oh no Chia good luck with that!!!!!!!

Here is the little guy in question..

Okay ,

the husband just called and said " F it, we are going to take him he is a good little dog and my parents are not good with all dogs anyway and the little guy will be happy with US!"

So, we have a new addition coming soon.

My sister in law says her husband had his mind made up, he is the one that wants to get rid of him, because of the peeing.

On what?

Just things out side and in the dog room and he cant "handle it"

ooooooooooookay.

Chopper is not alpha material at all, he is submissive, loves big dogs, and people and kids ( he loves the shit out of my daughter and ME especiallly)

He is not a threat in that manner or I would not take him.

We are going to do introductions this Saturday at a park I will take pictures and let you all know how it goes, I think it will work out just fine its just work, preserverance, dedication and a keen stern eye.

Wanna know what I did ? So goofy..

Angie, my little girl has one of those Rescue Pets, that makes a lot of noise, his name is Duke and she has a certificate for her wall Im sure you guys have seen those rescue toy pets before..

Anyway I took Duke out and turned on his barking and am already getting Samson and Lady ready, well, hey, I take this stuff seriously to where Im a nerd... ha ha.

Chia keep us informed...

Thanks Chia and yes Marty thats the plan we do have big property too, I think it will work out but there will be certain things I will have to do I stay at home so I have the time for this .

If I felt that it would not work out and end in horror, I wouldnt even give it a second thought.

Intro date is on, Sat we will alll meet, head up the a big park and let the dogs walk with each other and so forth. We will see how that goes .

I think it will work out great, I apparently have more patience then some people, I still cant believe this is the reason they are getting rid of him.

I'm new here, and don't know everyone, but Chia, I would be concerned if the chi bit you. You may get into more than you bargained for, it tells me the owners of said dogs are not in control, which makes me believe the chi's are unstable in charge dogs, not a good combo, they are probably more bully type leaders or fear aggressive, they may give your balanced dog He##, Good luck.

Chi how is it going?

Well, HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES HERE!!

Im pooped.

Gonna make this short long day traffic was a pain, thank god for IPODs and good dogs.

Samson and Chopper walk GREAT together

Lady and Chopper walk GREAT together.

In the van, Chopper was in his crate Lady up front with me Sammy in the back, nothing. No excitement, no lunging.

Chopper is a little nervous here and some one snippy but its getting better, Samson and Lady are not lunging at him in the house at all.

I do keep for now Samson on the leash when out and by my side when Chopper is running loose in the house, it hasnt been 24 hours yet.

I do the same in the back yard too, no lunging, calm.

When Chopper is in his crate, Samson will go to the crate, and just sniff and walk away.

I had to lay down as Im pregnant and brought Chopper and his kennel in the bed room, by the side of the bed.

The bed is off the frame as we are tiling, anyway, Samson came up as he always does, laid right next to me and Choppers kennel was right there and no lunging, just temp. sniffing and they went to sleep.

Lady of course is really is just laid back and doesnt care about anything. She was on the bed at my feet, she is like sooooooooooo low work.

Samson really seems to get it, but I know not to even get over happy and leave Chopper alone with him, or let him and Samson have run of the back yard just yet.

So far so good, but Im taking my time and the walking the dogs seems to really improve upon acceptance in the pack.

Since Im preggy again, this walking does not bother me as its good for pregnant women to walk.

Im taking the dogs for another walk here later, I do Samson and Chop, then Lady and Chop. I got honks today I think some people were Pit bull people one car had a sticker. Not to mention here I had Choppper this fluffy little guy walking side by side with Samson a pit bull.

So far so good, I take this very seriously and am very happy.

So, my fellow dogger folks, if there is any other suggestions, let me know and Chia, hope that is working out for you.

Renee'

Real brief..

Its working out great you guys, I was able to have all three dogs in the den sitting and waiting for treats. Samson first, Lady second Chopper last.

Of course I had them all go to their quiet spots to enjoy their treats, seperated like I always do.

Took Samma to the vet today he has this mole on his back that wont go away he is getting surgery this Friday, out patient to get it removed.

My vet just loves him and hates BSL , Samson got a lot of compliments today as usual he shows off at the vet, like "he knows" he has to be good because he is a pit bull.

Im going to be busy here with the kid, and the dogs but just wanted to share so far my success.

Chopper is a Cairns Terrier I have looked in to them and studied them, never thought I would own a little shit ha ha.

Take care all..

Talk to ya soon,

Renee'

As far as ours goes We are going to try again this weekend as last time was a snarl/snap fest...seriously I have started looking into doggie daycare for Paco...I am such a dork...but I will not let him be bitten or put in an agressive situation because he will not defend himself...

Anyway, sounds like you got another family member!!!!
