Dogs Need Homes During Shelter Improvements

NORTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY --The Humane Society of Lackawanna County is setting the record straight. An e-mail going around falsely claims, the shelter is going to put dogs to sleep, because it needs to refinish the shelter floors.

These dogs are moving out but, unfortunately not to a permanent home. The shabby-looking floor at the Humane Society of Lackawanna County needs to be refinished so they don't get in trouble with inspectors --and these pooches are in the way. Shelter director Warren Reed says "what we're trying to do is foster these dogs out so that we can do the floors." Reed says if they can't find enough temporary foster homes, some may end up at local boarding shelters for a couple weeks.

But this email forwarded to local media urgently claims the shelter is going to euthanize them to clear out the room. Reed says that's not true. "I know that a rescue group probably sent that out saying we were going to euthanize but we don't do that." Reed says no adoptable dog will be put to sleep.

The paint is peeling from the floor throughout the shelter. They're going to replace it with a durable material that should last twenty years. Over the next two weeks, the shelter needs help from the public"

Reed says "anybody who can adopt or foster a dog for the next couple weeks would be marvelous." Reed also asks the public to wait a couple weeks before dropping off any unwanted dogs they own.

Ideally, Reed hopes to find forever families for these fifteen dogs before work begins on Tuesday.

The shelter is open 7 days a week from noon to 4:30pm. You can reach the shelter at
