Default What should i do in the middle of the night when my 7 week puppy cry's?

What i usually do is in the middle of the night when my puppy rex crys. I pet it for a mintute then it falls asleep. Should i let it cry so that it knows that crying does not get its way? Or pet my puppy till it falls asleep again. since its young?

Ignore the crying and don't ever go to him when he's crying or whining. If you go to him it will teach him crying gets him attention and he will always cry. Just let him cry himself to sleep, after a few nights he will be fine.

I agree with Tat2Stuff. When Tess was a pup, she'd have to stay in the crate since she wasn't housetrained yet, and she howled and went on for about three or four nights, but she stopped.

Ignore the crying.

I assume its in a pen or a crate so I'd toss in a toy or two.

What has always worked well for me is a rubber water bottle filled with hot water. Just make sure you wrap it in a towel before setting it down near the pup.

Other than that, just be consistent. Good luck!

at 7 weeks he's still a bit young to be away from the breeder/mom and siblings so he may be insecure in his new home. A few things to comfort him might be a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel to feel like his mom/siblings and a ticking clock wrapped in a towel to sound like their heart beats. Also give him a few safe toys and possibly an article of clothing that smells like you.

As for getting up to pet him, stop that because he's quickly learning crying=attention so now when he wants attention no matter the hour he's gonna whine to wake you. That said, he IS only 7 weeks and may not be able to hold it through the night. The last thing you want is for him to soil his crate. If I were you then I would set my alarm at some point in the middle of the night right before he usually start crying and take him out before he wakes you up. That way he does not learn crying wakes you but he still gets to go potty. Don't do anything but take him to potty though, no playing just go potty, give a reward and praise and bring him to his crate.

most pups wont cry at night if you put the crate next to your side of the bed, they usually will only cry if they have to go potty, which alot of 7 week old pups cant hold it thru the night.. try puttng the crate next to your side of the bed, and take him out for potty right before you both go to bed, and that should work.if he cries in the middle of the night, get him up and outside to go potty, once done, praise , and then bring him back to bed...

I agree with ME and also about ignoring the crying if the pup is doing it for attention.

LOL Most of my pups were raised sleeping in my bed so I didn't have much crying just snuggles

You have been given some great suggestions, I really agree with the hot water bottle part and even a stuffed animal!

Remember, this baby is still a baby and way too young to be away from the litter (IMO it should be with the litter until 10 weeks, not 7)
