Question Any food aggression?

Our male, about 1 1/2 years Am Bull/ APBT mix tends to be a bit food agressive. Not with things accidently dropped or things out in the open but with things he knows are his. Only HIS food bowl. And he will only make noises and chase either our female or cat away but will not try to bite at all. And you can tell afterwards that he knows he was wrong in doing that. He will put himself in his crate as a punishment. He will never get aggressive if a human is near, even if we pet him or put our hand in his dish. he is fine with that just other animals. We feed them in different places to eliminate this but i was wondering if anyone has had the same kind of problem?

Food aggression with other animals is a common trait for ANY breed.

I feed ALL of the dogs in their crates to alleviate any stress or issues that might arise when feeding time comes around. Its safer for everyone and the dogs can concentrate on eating and not guarding.

Also, im going to move this thread to the appropriate section.

I concur with the above. For the safety of all animals, I'd feed in the crate. When I had multiple dogs, I fed in different rooms, or had one bowl on one side of the room and the other bowl on the other side.

One of ours (Madeleine) is a fast eater and will go for others' food bowls.

This is not a good idea.

We manage our three dogs meal times as follows:

Trusty gets fed by himself, with the ladies in a separate room, door closed.

Then, Trusty goes to his crate.

I let the girls out and set their food down - once they are in their seated spots, their bowls go down.

I do not walk away, but rather wait between the two until they are done.

If speed-eater Madeleine finishes first, she is directed to a sit and gets praise and/or treats.

Our Grady has food aggression. We figure it stems from when he was a pup and was fed with many other pups/dogs from the same bowl. Or it could be just part of his personality. When we moved to Vermont we switched from wet food to dry. The food aggression disappeared with the dry food. He was fed Oma's Raw prior to that. I think the raw diet is healthiest, but the kibble is much easier and I love to see his tail wag while he is eating. On the raw diet it was between his legs and he inhaled his food. Plus he'd growl if you came near. It was constant correction, hand feeding, etc. etc.

We've learned not to feed him crated if he's around strangers/company or other animals (he's more guarded of his food then).

I am reading all I can and soaking everything up. Tell me, though, I keep hearing the term 'raw diet'. Will someone explain this to me? Thanks!

our pup, Hawken, is food aggressive toward the others, but not food aggressive toward humans. So, I am not too worried about it. I just don't let him eat near the others. If he started to become food aggressive toward me, then he's be put back in line, for sure.
