Default Let's talk about toenails...

So I picked up a dog nail clipper and file today while at Target, since I noticed Lily's nails are getting pretty long. Wow, biggest piece of crap ever!

Can anyone recommend a dog nail clipper that will actually cut smoothly? Preferably a reasonably priced one...

On the other hand Lily did pretty well considering what we were working with. She just pulled her paw away when she got uncomfortable, so I made sure to reward her with a treat when she was actually comfortable with it. Any other tips? Or am I doing fine with just going slow and giving treats when she does what she's supposed to? We should eventually not need treats when she totally comfortable with it, right?

I got a pair from PetSmart, they were like $7.99 and work great, don't remember the brand, but there's a more expensive model that's crap, so buy the cheaper one

I just use the metal ones where you put the nail into the hole.

We are just firm with Toby that he IS going to sit there and we ARE going to do this and then we go slow and take breaks with LOTS and LOTS of praise, and allow him to investigate what we are using. So far I haven't hit the quick so yay!

We also grab each nail and pull it out everyday so he is used to us playing with his feet. The issue is more that it makes him want to play rather than get away LOL.

The good ones with the orange handle are Miller's Forge brand, I believe they are around $13, but they last forever, and they are TOUGH! They Can get through any nail! The ones I had before I left I had had for about 5 or 6 years and they still worked great! Make sure you get the scissor style and not the guillotine type, as the scissor ones are easier to control, don't break as easily, and are less likely to get stuck, shut, on the dog's nail.

Those are the ones I use as well. PetEdge sells them at a good price.

For the "snaggly" bits of nail that are sometimes left over, I use a heavy-duty nail file made for fake acrylic nails. Does a great job!

Resco is the only brand I use. I only use the guillotine kind as I absolutely despise the scissor kind. I've had mine for over 7 years and they are about due for a new blade. I've never had them get stuck on a dog's nail. It's also all I've ever used at work too, as well as the rest of the staff. The scissor kind just chops away. The guillotine kind is much more precise. IMHO.

I'm ordering some from PetEdge. Probably going to get some Frontline Plus too, so I can justify paying the six bucks for shipping.

The only place that carried them around here was Petco and they want a freakin' arm and a leg for them. Almost $18!!

I use the Millers Brand.scissor style too and after I trim/cut, use a Dremel tool to smooth them off.
I have had the same pair for about 6 years now and they are still doing the job.

I do all my friends dogs, cats, rabbits, and g.pig nails along with the 7 furries I got here at home. I have never once had to sharpen! And i coulnd't agree more about the guillotine style...they suk. Just remember, you get what u pay for...

The only dog we have to worry about is Nykauta, because the others being outside they keep their to a minimun! I use regular clippers and files on him too! Works like a charm!

I tried to clip her nails one and hit the quick (YICK) - after that I was taking her to Petco to have them trim her nails... well - for now - since I am trying to be more frugal I have decided I CAN cut her nails and we just have to go slow - remain calm - take our time and If I can only do a couple nails at a time, thats okay (over an hour or two) Instead of trying to hold her down. She doesnt seem to mind too much - but I just take a very little amount off because her back nails are white/clear (EASY!) but the front are brown (ARGH!)...

I think I felt worse about it than she did - but yes, I am sure that it didnt feel good at all. Another reason - the last time I took her in to get her nails trimmed, she came back with a cyst/scrape/little blood on her palm... IDK if it was aggravated by the groomer or the groomer cost it - but ended up costing me a trip to the vet/meds... I'd rather keep her away from the other dirty (infested? SICK?!) dogs... as well as save $$$
