Default Homeowner's Insurance

Those of you with homeowner's (or even renter's) insurance, do they know about your dogs? Do you have a policy to protect you in case there was an incident? If so, do they know the real breed of your dog? Or would you rather keep your dog a secret in case they decided to cancel you for owning a "viscous dog?"

I've always left my dogs off my policies (renters and homeowners). Of course, my dogs aren't outside unsupervised on my property, nor are they out if I have people over that are not friends or family, so I keep my risks as low as possible.

since i am in insurance, its better to tell the homeowner or renter company you have the breed of dog.. see, on the application, there is very fine print that says if you lie its called FRAUD, and if they find out you lied, and something happened, they will cancel your policy and you will have no coverage if there is any type of claim of any kind..

my HO policy knows what kind of dogs i have and how many, i fill it out on the application renewal every year..

My homeowners insurance knows I have dogs and knows what breed they are. They have no problem with it.

When I had renter's in the past, they knew about the dogs. It was State Farm, and they were okay with it. When we finally close on the home we're getting, our policy is through Foremost, and they know about the dogs, too. No worries, and no dog bite exclusions.

I was just wondering about it. I don't even know if my insurance covers the dogs; I don't really have a dog that I have to worry about right now. But I will be getting my protection trained Doberman in a few months and I need to make sure I have insurance that covers my dogs. Q is protective and I definitely plan on continuing his protection training, so I know insurance is a must with him. I honestly never even thought about it before now...

I have State Farm and yes they know. All they asked me upon registration was if I owned large dogs or small dogs and I answered them. I then proceeded to tell them what kind of dogs we own (as we have a Rottie & Dogo Argentino as well). It was no big deal to them.

I then went a step above and beyond the basic liability policy because if something was to happen, I don't want to have to live out of my car to pay for it. People like to gripe and complain, but honestly obtaining a $100,000 liability policy was less than $200 more a year. IMO, well worth it.

I've denied HUGE claims over people lying on their applications. It's not worth it. No matter what kind of dog you claim to have or claim not to have, if something happens, it is what it is, regardless of what you say. Be up front, an insurance policy is a legal contract, your covered and not covered for what is in the contract, nothing more nothing less.

I also have an Umbrella Policy which covers me for a million dollars in liability, it's not a lot more , but it's worth the peace of mind to have.

I work for an insurance company in Wisconsin that offers breed blind homeowners insurance. We are the only insurance company that will insure homeowners with pets such as rotts or pitbulls. Many companies will deny coverage if your family pet is considered a "vicious dog". Those of you who have had no problem finding coverage are very lucky! I would never advise you to lie...as others have stated...it could only get you in deeper trouble if you were to file a claim.

If any of you are in the WI area and would like information on polices feel free to contact me directly. We are more than willing to help in this area because it causes such a hastle for so many individuals/families.
