Dog That Inspired 'Mutts' Comic's Canine Dies at 18

NEW YORK The real-life Earl the dog who inspired the cartoon Earl the dog in "Mutts" has died at the age of 18.

Earl became a part of Patrick McDonnell's household before the "Mutts" comic started in 1994. The strip now runs in more than 700 newspapers via King Features Syndicate.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Earl, Patrick’s canine companion for 18+ years, and steadfast muse for the MUTTS strip. Earl was a joyful dog with a zest for life. He will be greatly missed by Patrick and his wife, Karen, their cat MeeMow, and the entire MUTTS family.
