Default Christmas Puppies

Crossposted:

On the 25th of December many families will welcome a new life into their homes.
The kids will be thrilled and excited, and the family will take pictures and be overjoyed at the delight the new addition has brought to their happy home.

However, for many, this new addition will soon be seen as the root of all things evil, something to be disposed of, and something to be thrown outside like the rest of the garbage and forgotten, or it will be abused and broken like so many other Christmas gifts.

The problem is this new addition is not an inanimate object; it is a living sentient being. This Christmas gift feels pain, feels hunger, feels abandonment, and fear. It bleeds, it cries, it needs to eat and drink to sustain life. Yet in today’s society it is abused and forgotten, starved, chained and left to die.

Of course I am talking of the Christmas Pup or Kitten you got for the kids. The one you just had to have for Christmas morning. The one you paid top dollar for, to some lowlife BYB or Miller.

I beg anyone who reads this with every ounce of my being DO NOT BUY AN ANIMAL AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT, and DO NOT BUY FROM MILLERS AND BYB’S. If you actually wait till about the 2nd week of January you will be able to visit your local pound and get the animal you want so much without a problem. You will find everything from the so-called hybrid puggle to the $1000 poodle, to the Turkish Van cat.

People will dump them around about that time, they are old Christmas gifts that are either abused or broken, or people no longer have the time for, or the kids got bored with them. If you really want an animal in your life, save these lives, don’t feed the puppy millers and the byb’s. Also if you really want animal understand it is a long term commitment, not something that can be just given away when you get bored, or they get old or sick.
It is illeagal to abuse, neglect or abandon and animal.

Also, if someone asks you what you want for Christmas, and you have no idea what to answer, say “CASH” then donate it to you local small rescue. (Just a thought.)

Sadly, where I work we are very busy... everyone is adopting a Christmas puppy. I must say, better the shelter than Craigslist though.

good post people don't realize it's hard work and a new puppy/pet demands a lot of time and attention.

good post...and all too true...

My Chi, Paco was bred, registered and placed in a pet store, adopted by a family that decided he was too much work, placed for free on Craigslist where my aunt "adopted" him...her dogs didn't like him so he was given to my stepfather who was then diagnosed with terminal cancer and asked me to take him....its so sad when people don't think of a pet as a lifelong commitment but as a temporary thought that can be changed. My poor baby was in 4 homes before he was a year old...he still has a few issues that I totally attribute to that. He trusts only a handful of people and is skittish still, but I am committed to him and he will never be shifted to another home again.

I really feel sorry for all the BYB pups placed during the Holidays...I'd really like to see statistics on how many end up in shelters or given away...I bet its a pretty good percentage

Great post Michele.

However, I must admit. I recently bought a Boston Terrier pup for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift two weeks ago. The both of us are very pleased with her. I didn't buy the pup because it was a good thought. I know what I'm getting myself into and NO she will never be placed on the back burner after she grows out of her "puppy size."

Although our "house training" session is a work in progress, she has come along way these past 2 weeks. At 11 weeks old, she knows how to "sit" on command and with the snap of my finger, she climbs into her bed inside of her crate.

This took hours and hours of work over the last two weeks to get her to this point. I work from 11 p.m.-7 a.m. (plus 2 hours of commute) and I would split my sleeping hours to accommodate her. My gf is home with her at night while I'm at work so she is never home alone.

We had talked about adopting but decided against it because we feel as if though we would never know the real temperment of the pup without being able to see its parent. Not to mention the fact that some dogs behave differently once they are brought into their new homes than they did at the shelter.

I've raised dogs, cats, gamefowls, ducks and even foster a fox as I was growing up. So I'm well aware of the responsibilities that comes with a pet.

Your crosspost is sad but true. Most people don't see the bigger picture of a pup as a gift...
