Default Building a Dog Run

We're thinking about building a dog run to contain our 3 dogs to a smaller part of our yard so that we can actually do some landscaping (or at least have a lawn). The back of our yard is a hill with two trees on it. I think that would be a great place for the dogs since there is shade and the space isn't that usable to the humans in the house. My two questions are fencing that we can see through that isn't chain link. I'm thinking of maybe a wooden frame (there is 6 ft cedar fencing around the perimeter of the yard) with chicken wire or some other material in the frame between the posts. Sound reasonable? Has anybody have built something like that before?
The other question is that we will terrace the hill a bit for them but what do we put on it? I want to use gravel or bark on the flat parts and plants on the sloped parts for stabilizing the soil. Any suggestions for either of those materials? thanks for your ideas -kate
