Default Water

Hello again,
I was wondering is there a way to have your bullie enjoy swimming in a pool? I mean I know you cannot force it, but I would really like to have Zeus swim with me. I know he does not mind water cause I took him to the beach and he went in the water. I went in with him or threw his favorite toy. I just was wondering if any other buliie owners had advice on how to get their pups to enjoy the pool.

Throw a toy in and see. It might take them a while to warm up to it. Some dogs just love the water, some don't.

My hubby got in the pool as I threw toys to him. After the 4th toy Sophie jumped right in and now I can't get her out!

Talking Swimming

Our dogs will only ever paddle but many Bull Terriers love to swim but i would let him decide for himself with possible the odd favourite toy thrown in by mistake

I guess it just came natural with Apollo. Throw a toy out and see, maybe wade in th shallower waters for a while and get your bully warmed up to it.

you could try getting him a doggy life vest? we had a Lhasa apso who hated the watter she was overweight and thought it would help her lose weight becuase she w old and was getting sore joints. she was terrified i think becuase she was afraid she would sink but after we got her a little life vest she learned that she wasnt going to sink her head was right above water and she loved it wed zip her up and shed run right in and she lost 5 pounds too!
you can find them at
petsolutions.com
or petedge.cm has some colorful ones and theres afew more places but i cannot remeber which ones im sure if you look around you can find more.

My Katie was petrified of our pool last year. Since she loved to play on the deck around the pool I was determined that she learned to get out of the pool on the steps by herself. I purchased a doggie lifevest and carried her into the pool on very hot days. I would hold the handle on the vest and guide her to the steps to get out. It took some time and patience, but now she LOVES the pool in the summer. She didnt swim well at first, she wouldnt move her back legs. This summer she has built up her confidence and will retrieve her toys when I throw them in even without the life vest.

I have worked in the pool business since the mid 80's and cant tell you how many people have lost their pets because of a pool. I recommend you work patiently but persisantly until your dog heads for the steps every time. Good luck.
