Default Pit Bull Temperament by a Pit Bull hater...

Pit Bulls Temperament & Characteristics</B>

Webster defines temperment as: the peculiar or distinguishing mental or physical character determined by the relative proportions of the humors according to medieval physiology: characteristic or habitual inclination or mode of emotional response <A nervous temperament>: extremely high sensibility; especially: excessive sensitiveness or irritability. Disposition: prevailing tendency, mood, or inclination: temperamental makeup: the tendency of something to act in a certain manner under given circumstances: the dominant quality or qualities distinguishing a person or group.

The breeds of dogs commonly known as "pit bulls" include any Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of one or more of the above breeds, or any dog exhibiting those distinguishing characteristics which substantially conform to the standards established by the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club for any of the above breeds; and the breeds of dogs commonly known as "pit bulls" are descended from dogs that were selectively bred for the purpose of competitive dog fighting; and the characteristics selectively bred into or otherwise commonly found in these dogs include:

A strong fighting instinct, together with a low level of
inhibition from fighting which make pit bulls dangerous to
humans as well as to other animals;

A strong chase instinct which, experts believe, causes pit bulls
to be a danger around running children;

A tendency to attack humans and other animals who exhibit no
provocative behavior;

A diminished tendency to bark, growl, or otherwise warn
potential victims of an intent to attack;

A tendency not to cease attacking once engaged, which results
in more severe injuries than those inflicted by other breeds;

The ability to withstand great pain, which makes it difficult
for a person or animal to fight off a pit bull attack;

Powerful jaws capable of crushing bones and hanging on to
victims even while the pit bull withstands infliction of injury or
pain.

The true temperment of a pit bull seems to be precariously hidden. Pit bull lovers will not consider their precious animal to be anything other than the best dog breed, no matter how many people are mauled and killed. They are blinded and need to know the truth. They need to know the troublesome characteristics of the pit-bull, which is gameness, determination, and insensitivity to pain....their strong, powerful jaws, their fight to the death attitude and emotional disposition, their intollerance to stress, sensitivity and carelessness with kids, and anger toward other animals.

Our temperment relates to our heritage and genetic background the same way a dog's temperament relates to its breed history and genetic inheritance. It is common knowledge, that the Pit Bull breed was created by man for blood sport.

First and foremost, memorize the following: THE GOLDEN RULE OF PIT BULL OWNERSHIP - NEVER TRUST YOUR PIT BULL NOT TO FIGHT! This breed is descended from pit dogs one way or another, and, given the right circumstances, most Pit Bulls will fight and against any other breed, they will win (you really don't want to see that!). Scared yet? You should be.

Everything a pit bull owners dog does, effects everyone in society. Pit Bull owners have to be extra vigilant 24/7, period. They need to be receptive, have strong leadership, and be able to read canine body language to recognize signs of tension between housemates. They must be prepared to separate the dogs if tensions develop. They need to know when their dog becomes aggressive and they need to take control of their dog under all circumstances. Sound like a lot of work and hassle? It is. Tantamount to raising a child, they need consistancy in training, devoted loving care, a warm, comfortable bed, constant companionship, exercise, and good food. They demand consistant attention.

The pit bull is extreemly tempermental, and will become aggressive under stress and strain. Tantamount to a 2 - 5 year old child, they are highly emotional, often frustrated, torn between rant and rage, and in need of constant emotional guidance. If a pit bull owner is emotional or insecure, their pit bull WILL anger and not knowing how to release it, IT WILL EVENTUALLY ATTACK...and it will probably be on the the owner or on the owners child.

Surely a pit bull owner believes they are capable of controlling this powerful, tempermental animal, but most pit bulls are smarter than the average man, and the pit does the intimading and controlling. A pit bull is incapable of emotional stability, unless however, the owner is stable, and emotionally secure.

How many families today are relieved of stress, strain, and quarreling? 85% of families today are dis-functional. If there is not peace in your family and you fuss and fight, your pit bull will follow suit.

Pit Bulls are often dog and people aggressive to one extent or another (this often shows up at or near sexual maturity). Tantamount to a teen ager when going into puberty, their emotions run wild. We have seen what has happened in our schools today, when a teen loses control. The same goes for a pit bull. Their sexual drives take over and seeking release, they over-react and attack. It has been known in many homes, a teen to stand up to their parents, usually a boy against their dad, (I have also known one woman who actually wrestled with her 12 year old daughter.) It is noted that teen age years are the most difficult. Now, take a pit bull, that is their temperment forever, they cannot mature, swaying to and fro like a pendulum.

A dog that was previously non-dog aggressive may "turn-on" and suddenly doesn't like other dogs of the same sex, or, for that matter, any dogs at all, even housemates they have been raised with. Pit Bulls should NEVER be left alone with other dogs and require proper supervision.

Pit Bulls may exhibit intense "prey drive", leading them to "stalk" small animals such as cats, rats, chickens, livestock, or other pets. Visualize this, "all the dogs and cats have been mauled and killed by the pit bull, and the streets are filled with people walking their bullie dogs and bullie dogs are running the streets without guardianship. How often would you want to go out of the house? How safe would you feel? Can you really trust another person's pit? Most people cannot be trusted themselves, how can one trust their dog.

Pit Bulls are precocious and incomparable escape artists, who will often seem to squirt right out of a supposedly secure yard or enclosure. They can jump over a 6 foot fence and dig under any foundation that isn't cement. It has been stated that they are the most difficult animal to contain. Sedalia Mo. pit bull law requires the dog to be kept in a kennel with a top and concrete floor, but this sounds like a cage in which I do not agree. I don't believe any animal should be caged or set out to die upon a leash. However, when you encage a pit bull, they seeth and rage inside waiting for the first opportunity to explode.

That pit bull running down the street without a collar, or the pit down the street, could very well be an angry bull, seeking to take his revenge out on you.

Pit bulls are intelligent, and love to be trained, in the exact way children want to be disciplined. The way all animals want to be trained, so they can get an "ATTA Boy, or GOOD Girl, and more attention". My kitties LOVE when someone says, "Good girl, or Good Boy". An un-trained pit bull reverts back to their blood fighting days and go on a rampage.

A Pit Bull that shows unprovoked human aggression (puppy play nips do NOT count) is showing BAD temperament and in most cases should be put to sleep. The breeding of dogs with bad temperaments is one of the largest problems the breed faces today and fuels the fire of bans and breed specific legislation.

Webster says Aggression means: marked by combative readiness . AGGRESSIVE implies a disposition to dominate often in disregard of others' rights or in determined and energetic pursuit of one's ends: dominating, domineering, imperious, overbearing...

And all pit bulls have been bred specifically to be aggressive.

Major Concerns:
1. Unstable temperaments. American Pit Bull Terriers are a dime a dozen today, and most of them are bred and offered for sale by people who need a feeling of "power" and "invincibility", and for their love of money. Obedience instructors and behavioral consultants see LOTS of Pit Bulls with flat-out dangerous temperaments. Because pit bulls have unstable temperamants, childlike, they can become dangerous at the blink of an eye.

2. Extreme animal aggression
Pit bulls are extreemly protective toward their owners and aggressive toward other animals. Many have strong instincts to chase and seize cats, small dogs and other fleeing creatures, including deer and livestock. Because of their initial "Pit bull" breeding, they are capable of seriously injuring or killing other animals and people.

To keep a Pit Bull in, and to keep other animals out, fences should be 8' high with wire sunk into the ground along the fence line to thwart digging. Gates should have the highest quality locks.

3. Providing enough socialization. American Pit Bull Terriers can be friendly, but they cannot be trusted. Remember, a pit bulls instincts are to attack when it feels threatened, and because of their obsessive, protective instincts, under debate or argument, a friend or relative could be their ideal bait.

I have heard that pit bulls need extensive exposure to friendly people so they learn to recognize the normal behaviors of "good guys." But children do not quite know what normal behavior is, so a pit bull cannot know the difference. Every person a pit bull owner invites into their home are in potential danger. Pit bulls are typically suspicious of others, which leads to aggression toward people.

4. Providing enough exercise and mental stimulation. American Pit Bull Terriers are powerful dogs who MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored Pit Bulls are famous for chewing through drywall, ripping the stuffing out of sofas, and turning your yard into a moonscape of giant craters.

If you simply want a pet for your family, and don't have the time or inclination to take your dog running or hiking or biking or swimming, or to get involved in weight-pulling, or agility (obstacle course), or advanced obedience, or schutzhund (protection), or a similar canine activity, this breed is absolutely not recommended. And since people fear this dog and veer away, it is difficult to find a place where one can do this successfully, without putting someone's life in danger.

5. The strong temperament. Pit Bulls are not Golden Retrievers. The best Pit Bulls are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal, but they have an independent mind of their own and are not pushovers to raise and train. They can be manipulative, and many are willful, obstinate, and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say.

To teach your Pit Bull to listen to you, "Respect Training" is mandatory. This American Pit Bull Terrier Training Page discusses the program you need.

6. Low Intollerance
Tolerance has to be learned, and it takes many, many years of practicing self-control. And as you can clearly see in this world today, few can maintain a peaceful and compromising attitude. Yes, just like you, pit bulls frustrate easily, but since they are exceptionally sensitive, they act out their physiological intolerance on other living matter. If you have small children, or if you or anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, do not get a Pit Bull. Their intollerance to children and old people is too uncontrollable.

7. The Pit Bulls Bite Grip. Reports of pit bull type dogs refusing to release a bite grip is more likely a function of the breed's gameness - a willingness to engage in a task (such as combat and aggression) despite pain and discomfort.

A variant of the 'locking jaw' story is told by Tom Skeldon, Lucas County (Ohio), dog warden, who said that an impounded pit bull that had been used in fighting started "going wild," biting at the walls of the kennel. He shot the dog with a tranquilizer, and then left it for five minutes to let it pass out. When he came back the dog had indeed passed out, but not before it had leaped up and clamped its jaws on a cable used to open the door of the kennel. "Everything else was relaxed, the dog was out cold, but its jaws wouldn't let go of that cable, and he was hanging in midair," said Skeldon. "Not even a Jaguar will do that."

8. Legal liabilities. Pit Bulls are already targeted for "banning" in certain areas. Homeowners' insurance policies may be refused or revoked if you are discovered to own a Pit Bull Terrier. Your friends and neighbors may be very uncomfortable around this breed. In this day and age, the legal liabilities of owning any breed that looks intimidating and has a fighting heritage should be seriously considered. People are quicker to sue if such a dog does anything even remotely questionable.

Most Pit Bulls are "too much dog" for the average household. Very few people really have the knowledge or skills necessary to manage this breed, or to provide the type of activities that keep him satisfied. And since accidents happen, and since they will happen to you too, owning a pit bull is like waiting for an accident to happen. I have found that is what I have been doing...Waiting! When will another attack happen? Today, most likely tomorrow, for sure the day after. When? Shortly you will pick up the paper or turn on the news and you will know of another mauling or killing done by the pit bull. Will you be the one defending these animals and blaming everything and everybody else, or will you stand up to what's right and admit to what you knew before you purchased your pit bull puppy...you knew the dangers of owning this animal. You heard about the mauling and killings and you heard loud and clear, but you refused to listen. Are you listening now?

Tip:
You cannot love and breed an animal simontaniously because they contradict one another. You cannot love and use something at the same time and come out successfully. I could no more make a brothel out of my home with my babies (animals), than I could with my children. And there are no promises that the new borns would get into the right hands. In fact, the odds would be against it. And anyone knowing the truth, that the pit has done This Kind Of Damage Throughout The Country and continues, should be sentenced as the murderers themselves. I see they are cracking down on this in many cities and states, and now Countries.

Few people know how to take care of animals properly. In some cities is seems they would just as soon eat them as deal with them. Some put their dogs on chains in the yard and leave them there, some behind a fence with no human contact at all. They become deepely depressed, lose their ability to learn, and die a horrible death. People do that with all animals, not just the pit bull. And No, it's not the pits fault. It's people. It's the breeders who bred this animal in the renaissance days for fighting purposes. It's the fault of today's breeders who breed knowing the inbred viciousness of these animals, the insecurities, the split personality, the seemingly mystics of these temperamental dogs.

No, it's not the pit bulls fault. It's not Blackies fault either, or the shitzu Molly, or the little girl that was mauled to death and layed into the casket, or the hundreds more that have already been and are going to be disfigured and killed within this year. God did not create this disaster, man did. And as man created it, man must take the responsiblity and put it to an end. Pit bulls will be literally RUNNING the streets where we live, if the breeders and irresponsible owners are not banned, fined, and jailed to the Greatest extent.

...too much wrong to even take seriously. So many HSUS myths abound in that article that I couldn't even read past the bulleted points.

Blackie Mauled and Killed by two Pit Bulls

Finally, the pit bulls have been found that intruded into my home
and sought to attack Boo Boo and came back later and killed Blackie.

My Day at Pit Bull Court

2 Pit Bulls Mauled and Killed Adorable, Sweet, Lovable, Blackie. A cat Everybody who came to my home loved. He was FAT, so he couldn't run or fight the pit bulls, so he was one more of their victims.

I am a lover of amimals, however after reading and hearing about the morbid and brutal killings of numerous people, children, babies and other animals by pit bulls in the later years, I decided to do some research.

To put it simply, pit bulls have a split personality, a killer instinct, inbred, rooted and ingrained in them. They WILL attack even those who love them, without reason.

Friday June 22, 2007, Blackie sitting in my front yard was attacked and killed by two brindle pit bulls within seconds of going into my house to get a glass of milk. I live in a secluded area and have for 30 years, and my animals have never been in danger.

Two weeks before the killing, the same two pit bulls walked right into my house and into my living room toward one of my absolutely adorable Himalayan cats Boo Boo, (I also have her brother Yogi) who was sitting on the sofa. I turned around from what I was doing, saw the two pits face to face with Boo Boo. Of course I was terrified and Yelled "NO", they ran, but later tried to return. I told them to "GET", (I have a very strong voice and I used it) and they left. I Didn't see them again until the day they slipped in again and murdered my cat.

Friday afternoon July 6, 2007, the animal control came to the house and informed me that 2 Brendle pit bulls killed 4 cats the night before. They had the girl pit in the humane society, they could not get the boy yet, however, they knew where he lived and were going to arrest him that evening. Every one of the cat's owners signed complaints, and they wanted me to go the the shelter to identify the pit bulls. I was informed where they lived a week ago, but they didn't seem to look like the ones that came into my house, then later came back to kill my cat.

Then the gentleman from the animal control said there were two pit bulls that lived over the hill where I lived and down 2 blocks. He gave me the address, and Glory Be To God, there was one of them in the front yard. Same color, same age, same everything that I described the day they came into my house, then again two weeks later when they came back to kill blackie. The fence around the pit's owners was so low that the pit's could practically walk over it. The pits are teen agers, what will happen when they mature?

When I called the animal control, and told them I could make a 100% identification on the pit bulls over the hill, they said they would get a warrent for their arrest. But, so far nothing has happened. The other 2 pit bulls the owner gave up and put them to sleep. But they weren't the ones who killed Blackie. Since the animal control hasn't done anything about the two who killed blackie, I have to keep a good eye on my cats when they go outside. They are trained to stay in the yard, (well, Boo Boo sometimes goes into the field next door), now they must stay on the porch, and it's nerve racking thinking those two pits could sneak up behind and attack them before they can get back in.

I often hear, "it's not the pit bulls fault. No it's not, but it's not mine either. It's not Blackies, or Lil Angel's, or Nicholas who was Killed by a pit bull. Who's fault is it? It's the breeders and every breeder knows the consquences of their actions. They know the multitudes of maulings, maimings and deaths of innocent people, yet they continue to breed the pit. They know that out of each litter born, that only 1 out of 10 have a very small chance of getting into a well, organized, peaceful, loving home. And the way the world is today, it's only going to get worse, not better.

No one seems to want to take responsiblity, and I am amazed at the people who defend the pit in the face of a mutulated child, mauled dog or cat, disfigured person or death. What is this spell the pit bull has on so many, many people. How can one defend a murderer, one who kills by shreddding their victims to death. Surely your pit was a darling little pup, but so was Charles Manson, Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson and the like. When we start defending things that kill in such a horrible, demonic way, we better take a good look at ourselves and start praying.

I think about the trauma people must go through when their loved ones are mutulated or killed by this renaissance, fight until death dog. It was difficult seeing Blackie being mauled to death, I cannot image seeing my blood born child ripped to shreds and literally torn apart. It's a picture that churns the stomach each time the mind takes you there.

We are suppose to love one another, it's the second commandment. Jesus commanded, "Love One Another". When animals maul and kill people and other animals in such an abundance, it must be put to a stop.

CONCLUSION:

The 2 Pit bulls that attacked my home were arrested on three counts, and the owners plead guilty and took responsiblity. They did everything that was required for the Dangerous Breed law and their 2 pit bulls were returned, nutured, micro-chipped, etc,. This person has my utmost respect for doing the right thing, regardless of the cost. God bless him.

I can now rest at peace knowing when I open my front or back door, that 2 pit bulls are not standing there waiting to attack and tear my body to shreds. Thank You Jesus!

BEWARE of Pit Bulls

You don't know the pit walking behind that chain in the park, the unleashed pit going from a car into a house, the uncared for pit who keeps coming into your yard. You do not know how that pit is being handled, you don't know what goes on behind closed doors. Don't let your guard down. And if you own a pit bull, get you and your pit to a professional obedience trainer, one who uses brains not brawn.

I would like to add. Perhaps some may think pit bulls are gentle and loving, so was Blackie and he was a very sick kitty with FIV and surviving...a miracle sent from God. When your pit attacks you or your children, your story will be told...but unfortunately not by you.

Pit bulls are running rampid thoughout the streets of the big cities...barking growling, killing everything in site. People are afraid to go out of their houses. It is hitting the smaller cities, and will eventually hit yours, so keep your children and little animals in the house, because they could very well be attacked if they are in your yard.

My Day at Pit Bull Court
Unbelievable, how an owner will defend their pit bull to the very end, regardless of the circumstances. How did it turn out? Well, the owner of the 2 pit bulls pleaded guilty, all the while saying this is political, it is a mistake, It wasn't his dogs, they would never do anything like that. They were sweet and gentle and played with the kids all the time. Oddly, almost every attack, a neighbor or family member would say, "that pit bull was so gentle and loving, I didn't think he could hurt a flea". Or, "he was such a kind and good man, he loved his pit bull dearly", and the one that floored me was, after the 12 year old boy was literally torn to shreds, blood and body parts strewn all over the basement, caused by their 2 family pit bulls when the pits broke down the basement door to get to the boy and killed him....The mothers statement was, "it was a "freak accident". UNBELIEVABLE!!!

So this confession of guilt and deep devotion to his 2 pit bulls did not come as a surprise. This gentleman however, was caught in several lies, and regardless of his pleas, the judge knew the truth. He knew the 2 dogs belonged to the defendant standing before him, were the same dogs that came into my home to attack Boo Boo and returned 2 weeks later and kill Blackie. The owner of the pits said I lived too far away (3 blocks), but I can see his house from mine, a straight shot. This was not a case of mistaken identity, same beautiful brendle color with white on their chests, 2 teen agers, same height, weight..etc, etc. But who can convince a pit bull owner, when pit bulls have their owners mesmerized.

I realized this when the two pit bulls came into my home and again 2 weeks later to kill Blackie. It came clear when I went to their home to identify them, and they chased my car behind the fence...I had to roll up the window quick, I thought they were comming over the fence. In fact, they would have if one hadn't tripped over the other.

When the animal control arrested the 2 pit bulls, they brought them to my house for one more identification. When he opened the doors for me to view, I couldn't believe what was before my eyes.

These same two pit bulls who ravaged and killed, and chased my vehicle, were cowering, scared to death, had reverted into little babies. Automatically I was angered at the breeders. How can one know the ancestory of this breed and keep breeding...animals with split personalities, who will chew you to death one moment and love you to death the other. How greedy, how calloused, how demonic.

I wanted to reach into those cages and hold them, instead I told them I was sorry, and I meant it. I'm sorry that people are so inconsiderate that they would create something so emotional to ease their own insecurities, and to fulfill their own selfish needs. As the animal control closed the doors he said, "yes, they are all like that when we catch them, but if I let them out of those cages, they will revert back to being a pit bull". And how true I knew that was.

Before that particular incident, all I could see was ugly images of pit bulls growling in my head, now I see a different image. I see an image of what humans have done to these animals from the beginning, and what they are still doing today. They are breeding instinctual killer animals with human emotions, and since most people cannot control their own emotions, how can they expect to control a pit bulls. It was the saddest thing I have ever seen, and it broke my heart.

In court The owner told the judge he wanted to get the pit bulls out and leave town. He requested that he keep them in his house until he left, but this was not acceptable to me nor to the animal control officer. In order for the pits to be released, he must go through the requirements for the "dangerous pit bull act". The judge ruled in my favor. He was very kind and sympathetic, especially when he found out that the 2 pits came right into my home.

In the corridor of the court house, the animal control officer introduced me to a lady that had been in front of the judge before me. He said, "she was attacked by a pit bull." I looked at her arm and face and put my arms around her and told her how sorry I was. I also told her we have petitioned a pit bull ban here. You see, if you own a pit and want to take a chance of getting yourself or your family killed, that's up to you...but when it envolves other people, children and animals, then we have to take a stand and protect the innocent.

Almost every day I hear another pit bull story, my avon lady when a pit attack her a week ago, the man coming out of the city counsel meeting said a pit bit his son on the hip and took a big chunk out of it...the owner of the pit asked if $20 would take care of it. A girl told her story right after Blackies killing, about a pit killing her dog and taking a chunk out of her sons leg, and on and on and on. It's never ending. Out of the hundreds of people I have asked their opinion of the pit bull, every person except 2, cringed and cowered in fear.

I have come to the conclusion that most people have pit bulls for three reasons:

1. Breeding pit bulls is a very lucrative business. They are being sold for very high profits, and the more crime we have in our cities, the more pit bulls will be mass marketed.

2. Insecurities: Pit bulls frighten people, and everyone who owns one knows this truth. When a person is insecure they need something to feel BIG. They walk their dogs down the street and everyone walks the other way. They are proud this dog gives them such a powerful feeling, because they lack confidence within themselves. A confident person would not want others to walk the other way, they would invite their neighbors in (love thy neighbor...and that means everyone) instead of keeping them out. A secure person would not put themselves and their children's lives in danger. A stable person, a dog could not intimate or mesmerize. A good person would not want to fighten anyone.

3. The pit bull is the meanest and the most vicious dog alive...this all criminals know and use for their own protection. They have selected the pit bull to be their weapon because of their incredible strength and powerful jaws. But to own a pit bull for this purpose, a gun or land mine would be more humane.

I believe the owner of the pit bulls who killed Blackie, his kids can now live a safe and peaceful life. This could very well have saved them, unless of course he gets them back or leaves town and buys more.

Surely it is understandable to feel sorry for pit bulls...it's not their fault. My heart goes out to them immensely, but common sense tells one that it is not wise to take them home and live with them, especially if they have children. If you want to disfigure and kill yourself that's one thing, but why not spare your children.

CONCLUSION:

The 2 Pit bulls that attacked my home were arrested on three counts, and the owners plead guilty and took responsiblity. They did everything that was required for the Dangerous Breed law and their 2 pit bulls were returned, nutured, micro-chipped, etc,. Don't give that Sarah Lindquist woman any more of your time than you've wasted on her already. I tried to leave a comment in her guestbook, and rather than just approve it, she decided to email me, and tell me that it was a "calling from God" that I shouldn't be defending the breed. Now I wish I would've saved those emails, but I don't generally store hate rants.

" Pit bulls are running rampid thoughout the streets of the big cities...barking growling, killing everything in site. People are afraid to go out of their houses. It is hitting the smaller cities, and will eventually hit yours, so keep your children and little animals in the house, because they could very well be attacked if they are in your yard."

WHAT? No, really...WHAT? I had to open my front door and double check, because I was sure I must have missed something. Nope, no pitbulls running rampid, or rampant for that matter. Didn't kill anyone on this site, or in my sight, either.

This person is 100% certifiable. I'm not sure if I should want to punch her, or get her to the nearest psychiatric ward for seriously overdue treatment.

Wait a freaking minute! Look what she is attributing to PBRC!

http://pit-bull-awareness-center.chr...uggestions.htm

Suggestions to Pit Bull Owners
PBRC makes these suggestions to pit bull owners:

"The very best situation for a PitBull is to be the only pet. The next best situation is to have a neutered male and a spayed female. If you get two females or two males together, chances are very high that they will not always get along.

NEVER leave Pitbulls unsupervised with other animals. When no one is around to supervise, the dogs should be safely crated or in separate rooms.

Always monitor the dogs while they play, and don't let things escalate.

Never leave at their disposal food, bones, toys, or anything that could trigger a fight. Note that in general, the first fight is an indicator of more to come. At this point, the dogs may need to be separated at all time.

ALWAYS have your Pitbull on leash when you take it for a walk.

Do not bring an adult Pitbull in a dog park or any other area where it may come into contact with other dogs that are off leash.

Remember that even if it's a non-Pitbull dog that starts the hostilities, the PitBull has the genetic to finish the fight, and will most likely pay the price in the hands of the authorities.

Early socialization *MAY* help, but is not a guarantee against your PitBull becoming aggressive at some point in the future. ALWAYS be prepared for it!"

I understand that a pit bull may live its entire life with other dogs and an incident may never occur. My old dog, Jack, lived with other dogs without ever showing any aggression or fighting. But my reason for stating these examples is to inform owners of the incidents that could occur. If your pit does attack someone else?s dog at a park, you have convinced the owner of the attacked dog and all his friends that pit bulls should be banned and destroyed. I am by no means a pit bull expert of any kind. I am just a pit bull lover that hates to see a wonderfully intelligent, obedient, and loving breed get a bad rap when responsible ownership could prevent that rap.

The basic instinct these animals had to kill cannot be trained away or managed in a moment of pure, raw behavior.

Dr. James Betts, chief of trauma surgery at Children's Hospital Oakland, operated on Shawn Jones, who was 10 when three pit bulls dragged him from his bike in Richmond and mauled him four years ago this month. He's seen cases where a single, crushing bite from a pit bull has "taken out the whole side of the face.'' Betts says the hospital treats 100 bite cases each year, and he's passionate about the perils of pit bulls.

"I think,'' Betts says, "if you have a dog like that in your house, you are recklessly endangering your family. For people to say, 'That is not going to happen to me' is to pretty much put the blinders on.''

Betts says a pit bull can exert as much as 1,200 pounds per square inch of pressure with its jaws, while that of a German shepherd is more like 200.

"That kind of grip,'' Betts says, "is enough to fracture your femur, the largest bone in your body.''

The pit bull apologists, Nelson says, like to say "judge the deed, not the breed.'' But he thinks that kind of logic is like saying "there is no such thing as a bad kid."
