Default What if the police shot your dog?

I know of a few times this happend. A dog would be outside in a fence or on a chain and either a kennel accident would break out or the neighbor dog would be loose and get within reach. A police officer would show up and shoot the pit bull.

What would you do if this happend to you and walked out the door seconds after he pulled the trigger?

I would call my lawyer immediately. Then, I would call a few "important" people.

First, where the F was I? I doubt I'd ever leave my dog on a chain. I'm too paranoid.

But if the police, for some strange odd reason had to break up a fight by shooting my dog...I'd pray to God they were justified.

Cause if they weren't...ugh...

I'd be in jail. or in a coma. I would most likely freeze up in agony, torn between the law and my rage.

I'd like to think that is highly unlikely here, the police and AC are very pittie supportive, it seems.

Actually, I got pulled over for crossing a double yellow. The cop didn't give me a ticket, but I got a speech about how dangerous it was and how I was putting my pretty little pitbull puppy in danger. Yeah, that part made me start crying.

Kinda hard to imagine, because I never leave my dogs outside unsupervised, and would certainly not leave them in the front yard. If I could prove the shooting was unjustified, I would seek legal help immediately.

I've thought of this one a bit actually. It does happen and if it does, my guess is you (me or we) are screwed. The truth is without a witness, a cop's word is usually golden. If he says the dog had it coming (for whatever lying reason) his arse is covered. Crooked people know how to get away with bad things and only a crooked individual is going to shoot a dog on what amounts to a whim.

My girlfriend's brother is a cop and he has no sympathy for Pits. All he sees are the worst situations – roughnecks raising them for protections or fighting or idiots who don't raise or train their dogs properly. It sucks. He's going on his experience.

I would guess the majority of cops have a negative view of the APBT, similar in ratio to the general public.

I've known stories of cops doing all kinds of bad things to innocent people and getting away with it. From t-boning a motorcyclist, or an automobile, to shooting a dog that was simply running over to say "Hi", with the only witness being the victim. Suffice it to say when it's your word against a cop, you will lose, just like these people did. They spin it around so that it's your fault.

Its a tough, sick world.

I worry with Brinks, and how he loves to run up and say hi more than anything – that given the the right senario – say he's running up to a cop, off leash (he's never off leash, except at one small, enclosed school yard) that his friendly run and hello would be mistaken for a charge to attack, and he gets shot.

It's always the chance we take as owners and defenders of what's become "canine terrorists" in the eyes of others.

My parents were raided for drugs several years ago. They, of course, were the proud owners of an APBT who did weight pulls , was therapy certified, and a search and rescue dog. She was also trained for personal protection. Without going into any details of the raid, out of respect for them, they had been robbed by the landlady, who then called the police. They were informed there was a "vicious pit bull" in the house, and there were 3 sharp shooters...one in front, 2 in the back, who's ONLY job was to dispatch the dog on sight. Thank the gods my parents were at Sturgis and took Sequoia with them! I viewed the carnage the next day, and the weight pull photos were strewn across the floor from one end of the living room to the other.
I think if the situation had been different and they had been home, Mom would have either thrown herself in front of Sequoia and taken out a cop or three before she died, or she would have welded the doors to the police station shut and burned it down. (Mom's kinda hard core like that)
Me?? I know nothing can be done about it legally, but I would be on the phone with a supervisor, the Mayor, the Governor, and every TV and radio station in a 500 mile radius. Fact is, the police have every right to shoot a dog they feel is a threat, and, because of ignorance, perceive all "pit bulls" to be a threat. Sucks. But that's the way it is. My solution: don't give them a reason to come around in the first place

I dont know this person; but I just found it as a bulletin on Myspace

----------------- Bulletin Message -----------------
From: Cheryl

This morning around 9:45 am my daughter gets a call on her cell phone... She turns to me and says mom they are taking my dogs. Before I could say who.. She busted out in tears and said he's dead... I then grab the phone from my daughter to find on the other end of the phone was suppose to be an Officer of the law. I asked him whats going on.... He proceeds to tell me he got a phone call from a lady who said a dog was trying to bite her kids. So he came out to see what was happening. He said he pulled up at my daughters house and got out the car and there were two dogs. Both dogs were my daughters. One is a Boston Terrier and the other is a mix that she found in a ditch when he was 4 weeks old. They both got out of the house when someone tried to break into her house. They opened her front dog and then ran when they saw the dogs leaving the door wide open... The Officer proceeds to tell me when he got out of his car the dogs were 5 ft away from him he said they both were running towards him so .. Yes maybe so because they always greed ed anyone that came to there home with love and kisses...Anyway the Officer tells me when they came towards him the white dog was showed signs he was going to bite him.. So he shot him in the head... After he said he tazered him twice.. I told the Cop he was a lire. I told him Snoopy did not have a mean bone in his body. I kept telling him over and over again he was a liar ... The cop said to me well if you think I'm leaving I'm giving your daughter a ticket. I told him to do so... He then returned two hours later and gave my son-in-law a ticket ... Get this a Leash law violation...

This is not going to go away over night. I have contacted the head of the US of American Humane Society he is now involved as well as the head of the Humane Society in Washington Parish. My goal is to have him fired and press criminal charges against him. !!!!
Oh and he tried to say Snoopy was a Pitbull.... I said who cares what kind of dog he is... And just because you think its a Pitbull you think you have a right to kill him...... .!!!!

I will see justice done. If it takes me the rest of my life.
If anyone can help me with any laws .. please email me at Cheryllynnsnow@yahoo.com

My profile pic is of me and Snoopy..
