Default How can you contribute to this community?

I was just chatting with Maryellen and we came up with a lot of good ideas. One of them was to make a list that we can rewrite and post as a sticky. The list would reference certain members who specialize in different areas. This way if someone had a question in a specific area, they could include your name in the subject title of the thread so you wouldnt miss it. Hopefully, it would help us all get our questions answered by the most knowledgeable people in specific areas.

These areas can be anything related to the forum, Pit Bulls, or dogs in general. Just some things off the top of my head are weight pull, conformation, conditioning, vet medicine, rescue, neutrition, history, statistics, BSL, photography, computers, hog hunting, flyball, agility, training, behaviourism, breeding, the possibilities are almost endless.

You dont have to have a professional title and there can be more than one person for each area and those people dont even have to agree on everything. So what areas do you feel comfortable answering questions about? Post it like I do in the next response.

To be honest, I am hear to learn - LOL (that sounded selfish!) I really couldn't help anyone in any of those areas because I am just begining to learn myself. I am just a little sponge trying to soak up the knowlege all you guru's have

But, I could help with Flyball. My lab plays. I don't know everything, but if I don't have an answer I would be happy to reaearch.

Ok so as per Alan's post
Maddie's Mom - flyball

It's a good idea, but I would be concerned about someone taking another person's word as the gospel without doing any research on their own, since people on that list would be looked at as 'experts'. Now, if there were a requirement about holding titles or something of that nature, it would work much better. There are plenty of educated opinions, but very little what I would consider to be 'expert' opinions.

And even those that many may regard as an expert, Diane Jessup, for example, will still have people that can counter what the expert is experting on =)

That right there^^ is very important, and often overlooked in behavior problems. The best way to keep your dog out of a fight, or to properly diagnose dominance issues etc is to properly understand dog body language. It is also important to remember that in regard to the APBT, specifically in regard to threat response, those traits were selectively bred out of theses dogs for hundreds of years. That's why it appears that APBTs go from zero to full throttle in no time flat, but you have to be a careful observer in order to keep your dog safe, and avoid legal issues. You should start a thread on that ASAP...

This is true and also anyone giving advice here for anything doesnt have the luxury of being there to see first hand what is going on. We arent trying to say anyone is the final answer for anything. We are just simply saying "If you want a free opinion, these are the members here most knowledgeable to answer your specific question."

I was hesitant to put my name on the list for Vet Tech because I would never discourage anyone from seeking Medical Attention for their animal.
There are somethings that are common. But never try and diagnose over the internet. I am more than happy to help you form questions to ask your Vet. To help ppl be more informed.

There are a few other Vet Techs on this site as well.

I have natural instincts in addition to knowledge when it comes to training and behavior and I've researched canine diet for the last year or so. I've also done volunteer work with a shelter for a total of about 3 years so I have hands-on experience with all different sorts of dogs, including many "bully" types.

Plus, I know quite a bit about HTML and art (be it sketching, photography, or computer graphics). I've also trained my dog in basic Agility commands.

Not an expert, but I feel I could offer some expertise in:

- the multi dog household
- integrating cats and dogs in your home

I'm knowledgeable in

~ Modern Veterinary Medicine
~ Holistic Veterinary Medicine
~ Nutrition
~ Training & Behavior

I have a love for working with dogs with specific behavior problems, including aggression. Since I've moved I have 4 training/behavior clients; 2 of which were extremely dominant/aggressive (even biting the owners!). They are now well on their way to becoming good citizens.

LOL rescue of course!

That and some behavior and training as well as veterinary medicine. (although I do agree with Cynthia and her points about giving advice vs. seeing your vet)

I just feel that if something was to go wrong I do not want to be held responsible. Also you can not diagnose over the internet. And while somethings you can tell what they are such as roundworms. And certain things. You just have to be really careful.
