Default Question for those who do rescue?

How many times did you take in a foster dog and get too atached to rehome it?

I dont let myself get too attached. Ive had two dogs I had trouble giving up. Both of them I did however because they were extra large males. I had one of them when I had Scrappy who was my dog that was shot by the neighbor. I didnt want to risk a kennel accident with those two dogs because it would have been very ugly. I dont know if anyone would have been able to seperate them if I they where alone.

The second one was when I had Edge and my reasoning was the same. They didnt like each other either.

Both of them went to excellent homes. I couldnt have done better for either of them and that is a great feeling. I dog sat Rocky over Christmas while they went out of town. He cried when she (his owner) left. He was glad to see me; but it was obvious he was home sick. When she came to get him, he drug her to the car and wouldnt come out lol. That made me feel good to know he was happy because he used to be that happy here.

The other dog, Sunshine, Kahn, he has two names, is the same way. His owner buys chicken, steak and eggs for him. He gets everything he wants and has several acers to play on with a small pond included.

Now Im thinking on keeping Dillan. Dillan makes me pay attention to him. He has taken to me. He is an excellent dog. He gets along with the females here and he and Edge coexist very well together. I dont let them play together; but they dont fight through the crate or fence. They respect each other. He fits in here perfect and he is an awsome dog.

I want to get a registered dog to compete in weight pull. If I keep Dillan, that cant happen. I have three dogs now and I sat my limit at four. That is as far as how many I keep for myself. Counting fosters, I have 6 dogs here.

none. there were however 2 dogs that i should have kept, but didnt. both are in excellent homes, and i get to see them all the time if i want. when i did rescue i knew that if kept any that would mean one less spot in my house for a shelter dog.. so i adopted out all the fosters i cared for in the 5 years i did rescue. (with the exception of 4 that were euthed due to HA).

i am no longer doing rescue, but still have my original 3 dogs that are mine.

Alan, I got attached once and three years later she is still with me.

It kills me to see one of my foster puppys (Soleil) on the adoption floor at my work after her month with us and how sick she was.... people tell me I should adopt her and I just look at them like they are crazy. THREE females?

If we get attached again, it will be Jakes choice and Jakes dog as the two females are mine.... I could see us owning three dogs, but I always remind myself that the more I keep, the less I can help.

I'm not active in rescue yet (still trying to get on my feet after moving and buying my first house) but when I took Divina, I had no intentions on keeping her. I was a Rotti owner and my favorite breeds are big, strong, working breeds. Why would I keep this little Boston. When I got her she was only 2 pounds at 5 weeks and I carried her around in my scrub pocket at work.

She snuggled her way into my heart so fast I never knew what hit me. And here we are, 5 years later, she's my heart. I'm so glad I kept her...

When I do become active in rescue, I know it's going to be really hard. But I know I can do it... I think...

Well, we've rescued 2 dogs officially even though we are NOT a rescue shelter. One of them is Fiona and she's still with us 2 years later and the other one was named Jester (that's what we called him anyway.) Jester went home after only 2 weeks of being with us and I cried so hard that I almost threw up. He had severe round worms (I think that's what they were, they were about 6 inches long) and was badly dehydrated and malnourished. We were told that if we took him to the pound he would be euthanized so I had to try. He was only about 6 weeks old, maybe 8. We did not have the money at the time to take him to the vet so I did an intense phone consultation with the one we took our girls to. (She's a Pit Bull owner and lover too) We had to give Jester one half of an immodium twice a day, the worm medication, an ounce of pedialite every hour and plain hamburger and rice offered every 4 hours. This was day AND night so needless to say I was exhausted. After about 2 weeks he started putting on weight and showing some proper playful attitude. Just as we were beginning to accept that we were going to have a new dog his true owner found us. He paid us for all the work we had done, even though we tried to refuse it, and took Jester home. I wanted to keep him but we already had two dogs and this man had proof that he was the owner but someone had cut his fence.
