A video of Armani's amazing linguistic trick is the number one downloaded video in the country and there are plans to have him on weekend talk shows.

The two-year-old dog has been spending half the week stamping photos of himself with his paw as owner Zouleykha Kogan becomes swamped with fan mail at her apartment in Berlin.

Earlier this week Armani went on the city's Spree Radio network to utter the phrase that has made him famous.

"He's a clever dog who does a lot of tricks, but this is the one that had made him famous," said Frau Kogan.

But opinions remain divided on whether the low growling really does sound like the word 'mama'.

Past resaerch at the University of Sussex has looked at what a dog means when it barks.

Analysts used modern technology to find out whether dogs communicate in different ways in an attempt to help owners better understand their pets.

They found dog growls are made up of components called formants, which form the basis of vowel sounds in human speech.
