Default Poor Toby :(

Great. Just lovely. The other half was in the yard working out Toby's energy and came in CARRYING Toby in is arms. Considering my other half is paralyzed in one leg and has a bad back ... and Toby is like 51+ pounds, and getting in the house means going up two steps, that wasn't a good sight to see.

And it turns out that as Toby was doing his zoomies around our yard ... he yelped and sat down. He walked up to Toby, felt his legs and brought him inside for "momma" to check out.

I had him put Toby down so I could see him walk, and yeah, my puppy done hurt himself.

It's his left back leg, and his foot was turning under a little as he walked, and the whole leg isn't moving "right".

No blood, so nothing cut or stabbed him. Nothing in the pads. I felt for broken bones - none that I could feel. He didn't demonstrate any acute pain, but I know him well enough to know it's hurting him to some degree.

So he's been crated to rest it and is now currently gnawing on his kong.

I'm HOPING it's just a sprained joint - or worse a torn ligament, rather than it being a hip thing or a broken bone thing. Anything else I can do besides taking him to the vet tomorrow??

He was just running straight across the grass when it happened. Upon further interrogation (LOL!) I did learn that he *did* peel out or slide on a turn right before he went for the straight stretch, so it's possible he wrenched something when he slid, and just didn't notice it until he went for the full out run.

*sigh* I hate my puppy being hurt. Wah. Poor baby.

i can fix him, i am coming to get him... LOL...

you can just keep him on leash/crate rest, double check the yard for holes, and see how he does in the next day.. if it gets worse, then a trip to the vet is in order.
can he put any weight on it when he walks? when he walks how does his leg move?

LOL MaryEllen!! He'd love you up ... hurt or not!

He was putting weight on it, but he was favoring it and I could tell it was hurting him.

I'm not sure how to put it into words ... it just looked wrong. Like it was out a bit from his body. We scoured the yard, and we saw mostly some things he could have slipped on and turned his foot on, the only holes are big ones that he knows petty well and he wasn't around them, but then it could be her hurt it and kept going and when he finally went OWIE and stopped wasn't where the injury actually occurred.

I'll let him out a bit later and see if it's doing any better, and take a bit of video of him walking if I can. I knew it would happen at some point since he just hurls himself at everything LOL but dang sucks when they hurt themselves doesn't it?

is it possible he actually twisted enough to pull a bone out of socket?? or really pulled a ligament? i would definitely keep him on leash in the house and outside for everything, and dont do any stairs with him at all.. if its worse tomorrow i would then go to the vet for xrays and a full exam..

just send him here.. i will spoil him rotten and dress him up..... heheeee..

You can't always feel broken bones. If it stays the same or gets worse, take him in for x rays.
Wishing Toby a speedy recovery!

I'd give him a day or so of crate rest and see if he is any better and if not head out to the vet. Make sure to stock up on good chew toys /bones to keep him busy and calm.

Even if he feels better unless he is back to normal within a couple of hrs I'd keep him on crate rest for a minimum of a week to make sure he is OK

I hope he is better asap

Hugs for Toby!!!

He's likely to see the vet even if he is fine in a few hours, knowing me, LOL!

Knowing how he slides around that yard, yeah he could have dislocated his hip. Sucks since I didn't see it.

He had to go out just now to potty ... he is bearing weight on the leg, but nonetheless, it's hurting him, he's tucking it a smudge and it seems he's limping very slightly. Man. I sure hope our vet has an opening tomorrow!

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for too. I can't afford xrays right now either ... probably have to apply for care credit, if it goes past what our credit cards have left on them. Now if this was around November 20th I'd be fine, but of course he doesn't hurt himself around when the free cash is available! lol.

Was too tired to pop online last night ... but vet says he's okay but to not let him run about for a week to give it time to rest. Seems to think it was a pulled muscle. Toby was walking fine that day ... so must have been us being worrywarts lol.

So YAY - no bad injury!!!

And YAY his treat stick came so he has some form of entertainment!

But BOO trying to keep this boy from running is HARD, LOL!

hard part is keeping them still so they can heal..a crate is your best bet..if its not fully healed he can make it worse..

That is great news!! Good luck with trying to make him not run hard. That has always been a pain in the bum for me to do with my dogs.

That is great news! I am happy for both you and Toby. It is hard. When my cat got fixed they said she couldn't jump...well...her bed is on a tower in my room which she has to jump to get onto. Or my bed which she still has to jump to get onto!
