Talking Lila, our new lovergirl

Lila is our new Pitt. She is 1 yr. She knows sit and is house trained. I have a ten year old that she plays really rough with. He doesn't like it, but I do not know how to get her to stop. I have a three year old that is visiting his father in Ohio. He will be back in three weeks. I need Lila trained not to jump, and not to play rough by the time he gets back. Is that realistic? I also do not have the money for a trainer/"dog whisperer". I would like to do this myself, is THAT realistic?
Her biggest problerm right now is chewing and attacking your shoes/feet/pants leg. I read the NILIF thread and thought I would give that a try. I read over this with my son so that he would be on the same page. Can someone please tell me what to do when she grabs his pants leg and drags him across the room.... all the while he is "ignoring" her. It is really funny, but I have to get it stopped before the little one gets back. Please advise.

Maybe use a rattle made from a soda can with rocks or whatever in it to get her to cease doing that. Apparently dogs hate the sound it makes, so its a good way to get them to stop without correcting her negatively.

Or perhaps a squirt bottle? That certainly works on our cats (who play crazier than pups, I swear....), so I don't see why it wouldn't work on your pup.

Kudos for working on NILIF with her!

This is a good idea. And patience and persistence

Not sure if this is happening but anytime your kids are playing it is always with a toy for a game of fetch, never play "slap the puppy in the face and get them to play with me", you need to step in, when your son has the dog go after him with his clothes to get him to play, have your son "YIP !" like a wounded puppy, you can step towards the dog and use a negative sound like "EH!" (sounds like a buzzer on one off those game shows), if the dog sees you as the leader he will back off and should act submissive or back off your son. It is better if you can be there to stop the first contact when he goes after your son.
If anyone has played the slap puppy game, this will be harder to break because he has learned to play this from humans.
If you happen to not be close, your son can yip and get behind a door so the dog can't get him, for 20 seconds, then come out and if the dog comes at him say EH if dog doesn't see your son over him he won't listen, it sounds like the dog wants to play and is trying to initialize it or play has escalated, if he wants attention we're gonna take it away when he gets to rough, and clothes count just like flesh.
This is much easier to show you in person so a trainer is better they can show you how and what it sounds like.
Have the dog get a time out if he doesn't listen to you, time out is for only 30 seconds no more than that, use a tie down of some sort on the wall in a stud, or use a dog proof room or if they like the crate use it if you have one.
You can try a can but it is not always easy to have a can handy, it doesn't adress the issue of dog seeing no one but them as in charge.
Okay tired and hope this makes sense.
