| Though most toads are bitter tasting and usually result in profuse drooling in any pet that tries to take a taste, only a couple of species of toads are truly poisonous. The poisonous secretions from these toads can affect animals who come in contact with them, causing a host of clinical signs. The poison is highly toxic to pets. Dogs have a high probability of dying if untreated. The Colorado River toad and the giant toad (also called the marine toad) are the two most common poisonous toads found in the United States. These toads are only found in specific areas of the country. The Colorado River toad can be found along large streams in the southwestern United States, from Arizona to southern California (and Mexico). The giant toad is not as common, but can be found in south Texas and Florida. Toad toxicity is more common in dogs than cats and usually affects young or curious pets who spend time outdoors. __________________ Got Cats? Slink on over to our Feline Forum! | Colorado River Toads, Cane Toads, African Bull frogs...these all carry a specific poison called Bufotoxin. This particular toxin can be very dangerous if enough is ingested, but more than likely 1: He didn't consume enough to have any lasting ill-effects (other than a case of yuck face) and 2: it's pretty unlikely your toad is armed with that particular toxin. Give him lots of water to help flush out the taste. He'll be fine =) |

| awww. Poor guy. Imagine biting down on a square of baking chocolate...now multiply that by about 1000. That's how bad toads taste (so I hear). Sounds like he's over it, but I bet he doesn't try THAT a second time =) |

| All toads carry some level of poison, but the type and toxicity levels, and animals it effects vary. I recommend to everyone who asks me about herps in their area buys a copy of a reptile and amphibian field guide. They're available at Barnes and Noble, Borders, and most other book stores. It's always good to know your native wildlife, especially if you think it may pose a threat to you or your pets. They have save the life of many a harmless snake =) |
