Default Would you breed outside the APBT?

Would just like opinions about breeding the APBT with other breeds..
Would you do it, if so, why?
If not, please tell why too....

I am not doing this folks, I am simply asking what your insight is on it..
thought it would be a good debate thread about our breed, to see what people think is right and wrong and why.......

Well, I am certainly no expert, and am only giving a very narrow reason not to do it and that is I see the result of some of these attempts on a regular basis as a rescuer. Generally what I see is an attempt to make the breed bigger and meaner and what ends up can be a mess. A dog that is sold for a few hundred dollars to an unsuspecting person, left over puppies nobody wants, free to a good home puppies, poorly temperamented puppies and ultimately hundreds of them in our shelters that don't make it out. I recognize this is not only the result of breeding outside of the ABPT. I also don't see any benefit to the breed to do it. Just MHO.

I wouldn't breed any dog or cat. There are too many right now. I believe given the time oof overpopulation crisis we are in, "responsible breeder" is an oxymoron.

Now I will give more respect to a breeder that at lest does it RIGHT to minimize the damaging effect of producing a litter. Crossing breeds IMO iis WAY out of that realm of "doing it right." Just the idea of it pisses me off.

No I would not cross bred an APBT for the simple reason of seeing the results of some of the crosses that have happened. I honestly feel if you don't like the breed how it is, get a different breed.

ok I have been known to joke around after seeing so many of the "new" breeds coming out lately that I want to cross a Shitzu with a pit to get a Bullshit... but I'm never serious, just a major smartass most of the time.. hehe

I think changing this breed would be a slap in the face to all of the people of the past that have put there blood and sweat into making these dogs the perfect animal that they are.

I agree with what you all say about the people that do cross this breed. Then i try to look at an from the standpoint of an ethical breeder that is actually doing it to improve on what he needs and still don't see many reasons for this.

I know of many breeders in my area that cross APBT's with Dogo's and use them as Hog Dogs and seem to have luck. But they aren't the type of people that are breeding and selling dogs. I don't know of a single one of them that is a family pet they are all working dogs. If one of the pups is going to leave the breeders yard it is to a fellow hunter that wants to try his luck with one. Although i don't agree with this practice it really isn't harming our breed and the owners are getting what they want out of them.

it would be nice to have all pure breeds but sometimes you have dogs that mate that arnt of the the same breed....my dog was one of those dogs...his mom and dad are owed by the same owner but one day they got the diaper off...hehe and my dog chopper was made he is beautiful.. he looks like a pit but is half valley bull...all the pups were verry well liked...we had alot of people want more of them so i say its ok..as long as there are homes for them in good loving homes...krista

valley bull? I'm not familar with that breed...

Just because "alot of people want more of them" is NOT a reason to breed them, or a reason to EVER let it happen again. I'm not trying to bash or come down on you (although I'm a little sharp) but this is exactly the reason we have so many problems in the media with the APBT. Too many cross bred dogs "looks like a pit" that are doing bad things (not saying it about your dog or any of the bros & sisters). Accidents happen but they shouldn't happen again.

Pardon me, but what in the world is a valley bull, I have never heard such a thing..can you post some info on this breed of dog...?

Secondly, just out of curiosity, do you have any concerns for the consequences that are involved in breeding mixed bred dogs?

Yes this is the breed that I referred to Chiapit, thanks.

I am not saying that I want to change the APBT, I am saying that mistakes do happen and the results are not always negative. Chopper is a beautiful, friendly, affectionate animal that looks like a pure bred APBT (his dad). Go to my profile for a pic.

um, I'm sorry, but your completely incorrect. Aggression is a genetic trait and has very little (or nothing at all) to do with "how they are trained or raised". If what your stating were to be true, APBT's who come from abusive homes would NEVER be able to be re-homed. These dogs are wonderfully resilient and although tenacious, can be easily re-trained.

Having said that, and of course this is MY OPINION ONLY, but some of the sketchier dogs that I have seen come through rescue have been the mixes....ya know, the Chi-pit mixes, the spaniel-pit mixes (spaniels very often have no bite inhibition so to mix it with an APBT is probably not very smart ) that sort of thing....On average the straight APBT were much more sound in temperment than any of the "mixes".

??? Do you honestly believe that? Genetics definitely play a part in aggression, but how they are handled plays an equal or greater role. Your statement that genetics is the sole cause of aggression is the same mentality that leads to BSL.

WOW..yet another mutt....

The Valley Bulldog is derived from the Boxer and the English Bulldog. As a result of this combination, this dog possesses a large head, wide chest, facial wrinkles and loose skin, while keeping a stocky, very muscular, athletic body.
Just what we need...

LOL so let me make sure I have this right.......YOU think that APBT's are aggressive because of the way they are raised? YOU think that that plays a bigger part than their genetic hardwiring?
