Default Whats your take on slang?

By slang I mean terms used by the general population in regards to the American Pit Bull Terrier and any topic related to them. Do you use slang in regards to your dog? Or does it just annoy you?

Some examples of slang: pit bull (I see this thrown around very loosely), game, gameness, pit, pitty, blue or red "nose," and whatever else you can think of.

Personally it bothers me to see some of those terms thrown around because its often in an ignorant or derogatory way. Like when I hear someone refer my dog as a "blue nose" it irritates me because it usually means they are under the impression that a "blue" (I just call it gray, but whatever...) dog is rare. I'm not saying all people use these terms in a derogatory or ignorant way, but its pretty easy to tell when someone does. It makes me put effort into not using those terms as much.

Does it make you less inclined to use slang related to your APBT? Or do you not care? Have you ever tried to enlighten someone who used slang in an ignorant way?

When I hear someone say "my pit", I just say to them a pit is a hole in the ground...lol

I try to say APBT on boards, but Pit Bull is just easier to say in conversation. Pit and pitty kind of bother me, but there are more important things to worry about.

(Just don't get me started on Pitt Bulls!)

Adding: Seriously what bothers me is when people use the term "bulldogs" (or bull dogs, or bulldoggers)

I don't know why it bothers me so much ... maybe because of the contexts I've heard it in.

I also dislike the term "dogman" or "true dogman" even though I've often used these terms myself for lack of a better term.

There are probably only 2 words that do not strike me as illiterate, ghetto slang.
I can not stand hear people talk like that, whether or not it is in regards to the APBT or just speaking in general, I personally can't stand it. The shortening of words to make your "lingo" sound cool, or make your life easier, is just plain lazy and illiterate.
When I hear people talking that garbage I just want to regurgitate, especially when it comes to our breed!

Seriously what bothers me is when people use the term "bulldogs"
Just out of curiosity, why? The modern day [English] Bulldog is nowhere near the true bulldog of yesteryears. In fact, many historical pictures present those bulldogs as looking very much like the APBTs of today.

Anywho, I hate the term "pit bull." Hence why I always put it into quotation marks. Here we are trying to educate the public in that their is no such breed as a "pit bull", yet we turn around and describe our dogs as such. It makes no sense. As much as I like to talk, adding 2 extra words into my conversations isn't a huge deal at all. I will always refer to my APBTs as American Pit Bull Terriers. My rescues get referred to as "mutts" as I have absolutely no idea what their true lineage is regardless of what they look like on the outside.

And I hate the term "pit" even more. If I see someone use it online, I copy/paste the definition of a pit for them to see. If it's someone who uses it in a face-to-face conversation, I ask them just how many holes in their yard do they have?

IMO if we stand around and do nothing while people use these terms incorrectly, then we might as well put our own John Hancocks on our dogs' destruction orders.

As for the 2 t's in "pitt", I have absolutely no idea how it came to be. I'm tottally baffled by it.

And as for using the terms "blue nose" or "red nose", I just politely say "How cool of you to notice that my dog's nose is red. However, I could care less what color any parts of my dogs are and I don't ever breed for color nor do I support those who do."

I dont really know why It's not because I think people are likening APBT's to the modern English Bulldog ...

i think it is because I have heard the term used by a few people whose values I find questionable.

Personally, I would use the term bulldog a lot more if people knew the animal I was talking about.

i agree. it depends on the people you are conversing with. if you and i were talking and one of us said bulldog we would know exactly what we were talking about, vs. say the average JQP wouldn't. i use the term on boards sometimes as i'd much rather see bulldog than pitty, or pitt.

Maiinly what turned me off to it is this girl I knew on another board who was ... well ... She was really enamored with the "modern day dogman" (the non legal version) and that was what she wanted to be when she grew up, ya know?!

She used the term bulldog and bulldogger ... I could just tell she thought it was so cool. That was what made me dislike the term right off the bat.

I don't really like most of the slang we've discussed because of the simple fact that 95% of the people I see using it are either in admiration of the current illegal use/abuse of the APBT or they are part of the unenlightened sector who just parrot whats on the news.

When there are 25+ breeds being labeled "pit bull" or the variations therein, it really makes me want to use the actual breed name more. It annoys me because its like the catch-all phrase for every short hair medium to large dog out there.

Example that annoyed me: When I took the dog to the vet they asked his breed (of course) and I told them he was an American Pit Bull Terrier. They write down pit bull... That just annoys me to no end...

Or the time my bf and I walked him in the park and this hispanic kid (no offense to anyone of hispanic descent, but we see a lot of hispanic gangs and other shady stuff in this area) starts in on how nice a "Blue nose" he is and "how rare," blah, blah, blah.
So, cranky female that I am, I chewed out my bf for parading him around at the bar his sleezy brother owns recently where some local yokals were checking out the poor dog and professing his "blue nose" prowess and rarity. Oui vey...

I guess I always sort of viewed the use of nose color as a description, much like brindle or fawn. For instance, I don't call mine a "black and pink speckled nose", but she HAS a black and pink speckled nose. Just a description of how she looks, nothing more.
The goofy nick name thing is a thorn in my side from way back in my reptile days. It's NOT a "kimmy"!!! It's a Kimberly rock monitor! Grrr!
When people ask me "is that a pit?" I say, probably in a very condescending manner, she's an American Pit Bull Terrier.
When I think of bulldogs, I think of English and French bulldogs more often than not, ergo, to me, my dog is NOT a bulldog.
I have to say though, I actually like "pibble". I think it has a kind of cuteness to it, and sounds very much like how my 3 year old says it. =)

Better her wanting to grow up to be a dogman (or woman) than a byb who's living solely off how many dogs her females can drop out during the course of a year. And Dogmen, bulldoggers, dogfighters.. whatever you choose to call them are what made this breed what it is today! You should have alittle respect for what made the breed that you supposedly love so much what it is today. Without the dogmen and the game, and selective breeding and culling we wouldn't have what we have today.

Better, sure. But not good ...

You should have alittle respect for what made the breed that you supposedly love so much what it is today.
This is the second time I've heard on this forum that I "should have respect" for dogmen. Not gonna happen. I have zero respect for them and that's exactly how much respect i will always have for them. Zilch, nada, none, zip.

Also it pisses me off to be told how I "should" feel etc ... I don't do that to you or anyone else do I??

Then in my opinion you have no respect for the breed...

If you have no respect for what made the breed what it is today... thats like saying veal is my favorite dish... just don't tell me what went into making it.

That's your opinion, and you're wrong. I love the breed ... that's why I'm on this board being freaking insulted.

I KNOW the history. I accept the history. I know the difference between how the dogmen "did" it (do it, in reality) and the way common trash does it.

But do I like or respect dogfighting even as it was (and is) done the so-called "right" way? No. ALL of it, historical or not, "correct way" dogmen done or not, makes me sick.

If you and others don't like how I feel, so what? We have differences of opinions. I'm not going to change your mind or vice versa so we might as well all get over it.
