| I started this thread for people to share occurances that make you look at people sideways and just shake your head. Thinking, all the while, that they are the "misinformed" people of the world. The following two cases were presented at the emergency clinic I work at within the past 2 days. They were *grand* enough for me to need to share. Case 1: Presentation: Owner bought puppy (Rottweiler) yesterday, today vomiting and diarrhea. Owner paid $1000 for this puppy because the lines were "german". Had 1 set of vaccinations. What actually happened: After reading the AKC papers provided by the breeder, it was found out that this "german" bloodline was made up of a 10 year old supposedly german male from New York...and a 7 month old bitch named "Sierra". The 1 set of vaccinations provided cost the breeder $2 per puppy (this is from a clinic KNOWN to vaccinate with water). When diagnosed with parvo, the breeder contacted our clinic and informed us that we had misdiagnosed the puppy...that he actually had coccidia (actually, he really had Parvo...really...we had the puppy in our care and ran 3 parvo tests *all screaming positive* and 3 fecals *all negative for everything INCLUDING coccidia*) leaving everyone wondering why he would sell puppies with coccidia. Breeder opted to euthanize. I mean, why bother spending that $998 you just made on the puppy to save him...instead of replacing him with another puppy. Asshats. Case 2: Presentation: Owner purchased APBT puppy from brother. Dog not registered (not that it mattered, but read below), vaccinated or dewormed. 2 days of vomiting and diarrhea. What actually happened: Owner had purchased puppy from his brother for $700. He gave the 1st round of vaccinations (at the clinic mentioned above, known for vaccinating with water...and for those wondering, yeah, they keep US in business!). Diagnosed with parvo about 2 weeks after purchase date. Was given "no charge" services of injectable antibiotic and SQ fluids at our emergency hospital. I inquired why owner did not contact breeder about dog having parvo, he revealed he had purchased from brother who breeds. Inquired about vaccinations, he reminded me that he had given the first set. I inquired about why the price was so high on the puppy...good bloodline? no. working background? no. Seemed to me like in-family sale would be less than $700, so I was really interested to know. He informed me that the dog was of rare coloring. After the free services were completed, the man took his "rare" fawn and white puppy home. I'm sure others have some good things to share. It doesn't have to be about puppies. It can be about misunderstandings of the APBT, dogs, food, nutrition, daily requirements, exercise, etc. Anything that made you think "...humph..." __________________ ![]() "It is true that Pit Bulls grab and hold on. | I work with several people that really should have no business owning dogs. One day at work the following conversation happened. One of my co-workers mentioned to me that he "min pin" was in heat for the first time. I asked him if he was putting diapers on her or crating her or what he was doing about it. He said that he was not doing anything that I mentioned but just putting her outside. Then I asked him I hoped that he had a fenced in yard and he said no, why should that matter. I just shooked my head in disbelief. I just told him that he should go get his dog spayed asap and not to keep her outside unsupervised when his dog is in heat. |

| In accordance with the run of *bright* owners we saw over the weekend, there was one that brought in "45# *purebred* Pomeranian". She swore up and down that the symptoms her dog was exhibiting were NOT of parvo because parvo ALWAYS means the dogs have vomiting and diarrhea. Of course, she really couldn't argue with the positive parvo test. And we couldn't dissway her of her beliefs that her dog really was not a pomeranian *cough cough* (Pom-Corgi...maybe...). Anyone but me realize how many PARVO patients we saw this weekend <.< >.> Vaccinate, please! __________________ ![]() "It is true that Pit Bulls grab and hold on. | well, I'm gonna stand up here & say "I was one of those ignorant owners!" Really though, owning a dog is so commonplace that most people never think twice about getting one. If they're "responsible" they'll take into consideration the cost of owning a dog, but not really the requirements of keeping a dog. When my BF got Debo as a puppy, almost 5 yrs ago, we didn't know anything about basic training, dog psychology, exercise requirements, byb's or puppy mills. He got the dog from a "friend" who had a "friend" who "bred" pit bulls. I know now that this guy was a byb and since he said that the dog came from "fighting lines" he probably did or was affiliated w/ dog fighting! Shocking to me now, but I didn't start researching & learning until about 2 yrs ago when my BF & I moved in together. Debo was untrained & crazy & we were about at our wits end w/ what to do w/ him. Thank goodness I did start learning, because all he needed was some basic training, boundaries & exercise. Now he's a great dog! Lots to work on still, but he's completely a typical APBT. I wish the knowledge about byb's, puppy mills & the overflowing shelters & thousands of euthanized pets was more widespread. Knowing what I know now, I'll never "buy" another cat or dog, only adopt. I'm not knocking responsible breeders, but the majority who breed are not responsible, as y'all know! |

I have a good one from this morning. So my boyfriend actually let me have doggie visitation this weekend (he usually feeds me some crap about Sparky needing to "protect" the house, HA! thats a funny thought).First time Sparky elimates in the backyard I go to pick it up and its nasty diarreha (sp?). Knowing his sensative tummy, I know the food my bf picked up at Wal Mart the other day when he said he needed dog food must be something really awful. Of course the poor pup has diarreha all weekend from that and food being suddenly switched to something else upon coming to my house. When my bf took him away this morning, I asked what kind of food he bought the other night... yup Ol' Roy. ![]() ![]() I've given him the dog nutrition lecture time and again, but its like he's wearing freaking earmuffs. Grr. Oh and Sparky would probably have parvo by now if I hadn't taken him to the vet. And there would be a puppies by now at my bf's house because his brother's female APBT (which was obtained as a status symbol from a byb) is not spayed or vaccinated. And she is also aggressive toward Sparky. ![]() I'm so pissed that someone could be so oblivious because I know my boyfriend really likes animals, but this can't possibly be cluelessness by now because I have done tons of research and passed it on... People astound me, and not in a good way. One other story is how my first dog died last summer. Completely preventable. He was a 14yo border collie/heeler mix. Long fluffy border collie fur, which was usually matted into dreads because I was off at college and I was the only one who brushed him (he didn't like anyone but me touching his back end either so it was the worst). I told my parents to take him to the vet and get him clipped (sedation was needed to trim him because the mats hurt when touched) before spring came and the farm gunk got icky in his mats. Of course they didn't and when I got home from school he was so sick from the maggots on his stomach that he didn't even fight when held down for trimming/spraying. ![]() I held his head while my stepdad sprayed him down (I'm sure he probably got the fly junk from the vet for his sheep, but I still was not comfortable with home doctoring in this case) and cut off the really badly infested mats. It was the most awful thing ever, he only whimpered and I didn't even have to hold his head down like we should've had to if he was himself. He did get antibiotics, we have those on hand for the other critters. We had to hold him down and treat him again a couple days later, by cutting off more infested hair. A whole bunch of his skin necrotized, but he grew new skin before it flaked off. He got really skinny and to get him to eat anything either my mom or I had to sit with him. Keep in mind summer was high 90's at this time. He started getting better and doing pretty good. Probably would have pulled through but my little brother and stepdad forgot to tie him up while they were putting hay in the barn with the tractor. He always had a neurotic thing for biting tires. so he got rolled by the tractor (not the first time) and this time it must've done internal damage. ![]() ![]() Still no vet visit. Just tried fruitlessly to get him to eat. His bowels shut down, so we knew it was only a matter of days. Even at the end I could see he was still himself in his eyes. My poor Buddy. ![]() And yes I did pester about taking him to the vet at the time. My stepdad's heeler had this growth under her left armpit. it got so huge it impeded her walking. He never took her to get it biopsied. That bothered me and I didn't even like that little dog. Needless to say she died this March when one of our cows (had just calved) rolled her. I think it ruptured the tumor because there was blood everywhere from it. Yup thats right, no vet again. Part of the reason in this case was probably due to the fact that she was a sheep killing dog, but only when she could get another dog to help her. Very sneaky, would never trust that dog. But my stepdad didn't have the heart to euthanize her at the time (years ago). I have a very vehement distaste for animal neglect now. |

| Unfortunately, this has to be about a family member. My, not-so-intelligent, family member had bought a dog. Aside from the fact that the dog had not had his second round of shots, he bred this dog with a three legged dog. Even better, there was a huge parvo problem in this city. Even the local humane socitey had yo close down. Neither of the dogs were registered, of course. Then, this dog becomes "bad". Chewing up stuff, peeing and pooping in the house, so he gives it to someone. Of course, this relative of mine claims he contributed nothing to his dog behaving that way. It was all the dogs fault. So the puppies come, and he wants to sell them for over $300 dollars. No papers, no shots. He sells 3 and then there leaves two. He still does not get the dogs shots. One of the most beautiful pitties I have ever seen...dies. Now he has just gotten a new dog. I can only wait to see what stupid action he can commit that will top all of these. It's so bad that the vet that he did see, sometimes, said she would drop him if he did not become a responsible dog owner. Yes, I have tried to talk to him...as you can see it has gotten me nothing. Well, nothing except getting into a huge argument. We are on terrible terms as of right now, and I think it's better that way. |

| You should share with him that that'll get you a fat fine in some places. At least here, it's illegal to keep a bitch in heat outside. __________________ *** Lindsay "I don't want to waste another day stuck in the shadow of my mistakes." |

Yup, I'm now scarred for life. I want to cry every time I think about it.In fact the vet probably would have given us sedation pills to use at home since my stepdad knows them really well. ![]() I've got personal grudge against people who neglect basic care of their pets now (well I didn't like it before either). |

Instead of fruitlessly arguing with him (sorry your on terrible terms now btw) maybe its time to call the SPCA and turn him in for neglect. See if they'll let you do it anonymously and maybe you can find a rescue that would take the dog. That situation sucks! |

| That does seem like a very logical move. On the other hand, I am worried that he will just go ahead and get another one. He is going to breed them. I asked him and he said no...but I know the truth. He did it with the last one. He wants the money. I just find it hard to believe he could see himself as a fit owner when one of his puppies died. Now, I know that it can happen. People who have taken care of their dogs, and something terrible happens. But he is being completely negligent. It is something I will have to give much though. Thank you for the suggestion. |

That just sucks though. I'm sorry you have to watch a family member do something like that. It sounds just like the BYB that my boyfriend was going to buy a rottie pup from. He had her picked out from the litter and everything and then the woman let her die from getting her head stuck in the fence. Stuff like that kinda makes me wish there could be legal action (as in they can't own another animal) against repeat negligence. Of course that could be problematic in the hands of an ignorant person with a political agenda. |

A dog suffered in your care. I am not attacking you just shocked is all. I understand not everyone has money. But if you can not afford basic care then you should not own a dog. __________________ They say you can't turn a bad girl good But once a good girl's gone bad, she's gone forever |

They can afford basic care (hell I'm sure they could afford an emergency trip even), but my parents live out in the middle of nowhere and the "good ol' boy" farm/ranch mentality is living well in my stepfather. Of course maybe he was just being an a$$hole because its my dog. He sure was quick to take his pup to the vet a few years ago when his shoulder got shattered trying to chase down my horse (he and the female heeler had been killing sheep as well). I can sure tell you he's just waiting for my horse to die. He didn't want to vaccinate Smokey for West Nile. I have to self administer all shots and hoofcare to him because they won't call a vet/farrier out for his basic care. In fact I had a yelling match with him because my mom and I picked up Smokey's annual shots at the same time as some crumbles for his damn sheep. I can't wait until I get a new job and can move him to board closer to me.I know you aren't attacking, but now I feel even worse about the whole thing. While I personally know that the situation was out of my control, I will beat myself up about it for the rest of my life. Yes maybe I should have thrown a bigger fit about taking Buddy to the vet, but I really don't think it would have changed the actions that were taken by my family and that is one of the hardest facts that I have to live with--that they didn't care enough about our pet to give him what he deserved. ![]() My roommate and I have just spent a crapload of money on vet bills trying to get healthy the two cats we got from my parents barn. There were about 10 cats in the barn and they pass respritory infections around constantly. Finally these two are doing well: they put on a ton of weight (are now at a healthy weight) and play nonstop. I actually got attacked by my cheap roommate for insisting that we buy food that does not have corn as the first ingredient--because I belive they should have proper nutrition. I honestly wonder if she would have called the vet to get them new medication after they relapsed. I like my roommate, but I wonder about that... If it makes you feel better I am in the process of getting a dog (that I have provided basic care to!) away from someone who is oblivious to what basic care is and financially incapable of providing basic care to him. Honestly if I can't get the dog away from him myself I will have to call animal control because I know he will never change in regards to this issue. ![]() |

A dog is a lifetime commitment. And in the last yr I have spent over $3000 dollars on Vet care. And that is with a 40% disc I recieve at work. Now the tumor removal, and ACL surgery are in that. Those were not planned. A spay for my pit mix. Annual vaccines. The hospitalization of my FELV + cat that I adopted. And then her euth'ing. So just know with annuals shots and heartworm and flea preventative you are looking to spend at least $200 a year and that does not even include food. That is basic care. I wish you luck. And I am sorry you had to experience such a hard lesson. __________________ They say you can't turn a bad girl good But once a good girl's gone bad, she's gone forever |

Thanks for the good luck wishes. ![]() Yeah I know how crazy vet costs can get, but somehow when they cuddle up and give you a doofy grin its all worth it. I paid over $200 already this year just to get Sparky fixed and all his basic shots in order. He does have a flea collar, but I'd like to switch to a spot-on. Thankfully fleas havn't been a problem for him. Unfortunately, since he lives with my bf 95% of the time, he is not on a heartworm preventative yet. That will certainly come the moment I am able to get him tested for heartworms though. Right now I'm more worried about his nutrition than anything else. He's such a sweetie, I'm glad that I'm around to make sure he gets his basic care. I don't even want to add up what its taken to get these crazy cats healthy. I'm just glad they are doing well finally. |

The best thing is to get Frontline, Revolution, Advantix. I use Frontline on one of my dogs and Revolution on the rest. I do not have any issues with fleas. I live in the Country in GA. __________________ They say you can't turn a bad girl good But once a good girl's gone bad, she's gone forever |
