Default Hog hunting (opinions)

I have searched the forum for stuff on hog hunting and using our dogs. What I have found is very confusing. I like to hunt and my dogs love it. My oldest Betty has brought down a 450 lb boar( the largest one to date) by herself , with me right behind her. I'm just wondering what ya'lls opinion is on this. I've seen things about gameness but that seems to be about fighting not hunting. Betty won't quit until I make her.My younger dog Maggie, whose less than a year old, goes with us and is going to be a damn good hog dog. Maggie wants to be in there so bad it seems to hurt. I have been holding her back a little so she can watch and learn from Betty. I would like every opinion I can get.

I hate to reply to my own thread but after I posted this I saw the related threads below and found a lot of the information that I was seeking. I suppose I just don't know how to use the search option properly.

No prob. It's late.....we'll forgive you.

Honestly, I was going to reply tomorrow. I'm just too tired tonight. But in the meantime, feel free to bump up any of those threads (by posting to them).

I would love to go hog hunting someday.

I think it is good that you are working your dogs. I think I missed the question, but I just wanted to say that I am for using your dogs to hunt.

I have never hunted with my dogs, but I wouldn't be against it, especially if I had the proper cut gear.

Unfortunately I'm a total dummy when it comes to this computer stuff. I have a bunch of phone pictures but I have to get my kids to download them. They have been busy the last few weeks, so my pics are still on the phone. I really wish they where able to help me cause I've got my phone plum full. Hopefully it will be fairly soon.

I'd love to hog hunt someday, I see nothing wrong with it as long as you know what you are doing and take precautions.

But if you've done it then you know way more about it than I do.

Do you have a photobucket account? On your account with photobucket, they have an email address that you can text your cell phone pictures to. This is what I do with mine.

Wait, what exactly is hog hunting? You let your dog loose on a wild hog and it chases it and attacks it? Do you shoot the hog after your dog catches it? Do you eat it? Do you do this in events or for fun or for food. Whats the point in hog hunting? I am confused.

The dogs are there to catch it and hold it. Usually if you use dogs, you take the hog out with a knife, but you can shoot it as well, but I guess you'd need to get the dogs away from it first.
You can definitely eat it, and some people stuff it.
The purpose is that hogs are way overpopulated in places and are destroying crops and land all over. They have become very troublesome.

i c.... As long as people take the hogs out them selves after the dogs captures it .. then i have no problem with it. But.. If they let the dog attack the hog for more then 5 minutes and let it suffer then i have a problem, because the hog would be in great pain.. Sounds like an interesting fun sport .. thanks for the clear up jean

my mom got to see some hog-dog Catahoulas when she went to Florida. She fell in love with them and now she is trying to convert me to "catahoula-ism". i see nothing wrong with using dogs to hunt.that is how many breeds came about.it seems like a pretty suitable job for an apbt if the dogs focus on the hog

Sometimes it takes a little bit of time for the hunter(s) to catch up to the hog and dogs, so, at times, they might hold on for a while, but the dogs are more of a holding force (as I understand it), then an attacking force.

I'm against doing things that risk harm to the dog without a good reason, but getting food and eliminating invasive species seem like good reasons to me.

I imagine that the likelihood of catching the hog is much better with dogs than just sitting in a tree stand, but I'm curious what the hunters have to say about that.

I see nothing wrong with any kind of hunting or animal vs animal sport. Love going coon hunting! And I am hoping to go with a friend of mine when he decides to go after some coyotes (which are getting bad here) Never been bear or hog hunting.. but I'd love to. Animals doing what they were bred to do is what I want to see... be it a coon hound treeing a coon, or a beagle running a rabbit or a bulldog scratching!

Hog hunting is awesome! While I haven't had the chance to do it personally yet, I know a lot of people who do... it's a great way to work out your dogs, and they really enjoy it.

But like anything, it needs to be done by people that know how to keep their dogs safe.

I think a lot of the people who don't use dogs, set-up an area and leave some bait every night to start getting them coming to the area, and then eventually they get them.

I don't know if one is easier than the other, but hog hunting with dogs is much more appealing to me. lol.

o:

What if the dog gets lost or the boar runs in the street or a bear comes . Isnt it dangerous? Or do the people that do this know the area that they are in and its surroundings etc.....
