Default Animal Shelters Change Policies on Pit Bulls

Rockville, MD - Monday July 30, 2007 8:23 am

Pit bulls that end up at animal shelters are often euthanized because of policies banning their adoption. But many shelters in the Washington area are rethinking those policies.

Advocates say not all pit bulls are as vicious as their reputation.

In Montgomery County, pit bulls can now be adopted after they have been evaluated and cleared by animal-behavior specialists.

Officials there say 160 pit bulls have been adopted in the 15 months since the new policy went into effect.

In Virginia, Prince William and Arlington counties have similar policies.

D.C. and Fairfax County also allow pit bull adoptions, and Loudoun County and Alexandria are considering lifting their bans.
