Default Satin Balls Recipe

"Satin Balls" are a total canine diet. But be very careful, as it will put weight on a dog fast, if you feed enough. It can be feed by itself, but because it is so rich and high in calories, I only feed as a supplement.

So, if you have a sick dog needing to be built up or an underweight dog dog with little or no appetite, they may do very well on "Satin Balls" as a supplement.
Also, I give about a 1/4 pound occasionally, to maintain beautiful coats and energy level.
Don't mix or hide Satin Balls in with kibble, your dog will make a mess of the kibble, trying to get to the Satin Balls.
It is perfectly fine to freeze Satin Balls in pre-formed and weighed portions.
When mixing the ingredients, it is a gooy mass. For easy clean up purposes, I wear Latex Exam Gloves and mix by hand ...lol... but that is just me.
There are many sites with recipes for "Satin Balls", but I chose the following, because it breaks the recipe down into various sizes.

My dogs love Satin Balls and I bet yours will too

Satin Balls ~~~

All ingredients are uncooked RAW and "Satin Balls" are served raw.

Satin Balls for Little Dogs -- or to try out recipe on your dog to see if he will eat it.

1 lb cheap hamburger (for high fat %)
1 and 1/3 cups Total cereal
1 and 1/2 cups uncooked oatmeal
1 raw egg
6 Tablespoons wheat germ
1 package Knox unflavored gelatin
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
2 Tablespoons unsulfured molasses
Pinch of salt

Satin Balls Half Recipe
5 lbs cheap hamburger (for high fat %)
1/2 large box Total cereal (about 6 cups cereal)
1/2 large box uncooked oatmeal (about 7.5 cups oats)
5 raw eggs
1/2 of 15oz jar wheat germ (about 2 cups)
5 packages Knox unflavored gelatin
5/8 cup vegetable oil (this is pretty close to 2/3 cup)
5/8 cup unsulfured molasses
Pinch of salt

Satin Balls Full Recipe
10 lbs cheap hamburger (high fat %)
1 large box Total cereal (about 12 cups cereal)
1 large box uncooked oatmeal (about 15 cups oats)
10 raw eggs
1 15oz jar wheat germ
10 packages Knox unflavored gelatin
1 and 1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 and 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses
Pinch of salt

Notes:

"Whole Wheat Total" cereal (blue box) comes in large 1 lb 2 oz size (about 12 cups settled) and a smaller 12 oz size (about 8 cups cereal), which would work in Little Dog or Half Recipe. But in the long run, the large size is more economical. Don't get Raisin Total or Lo Carb Total.

Uncooked Oatmeal like "Quaker Old Fashioned Oats" and less expensive supermarket house brand, come in large 2 lb 10oz size (15 cups oats) or smaller 18 oz size (about 7 cups oats).

15oz jar of wheat germ is about 4 cups. Some stores only carry a 12oz jar of wheat germ, which contains about 3 and 1/4 cups of it.

Vegetable oil -- use a good one. I use olive oil.

You will find additional notes and comments at the following site ~ http://theherbs.info/Pets/satinball.html

What is Total cereal? Is it a brand name or a type? Just trying to think what our equivalent would be?

Sounds tasty though lol

Ooh, and what weight in gelatin?

Sorry to be a pain in the ass!

I have no idea what the equivalent breakfast cereal would be in England.

"Total" is made of all natural, crunchy, whole-grain wheat flakes, and is fortified so that it provides 100% of the Daily Value of 12 vitamins and minerals.

"Total" is either "Whole Grain" (blue box and the one called for in the Satin Ball recipe) OR, the ones NOT to use, Cranberry Crunch, Honey Clusters and Raisin Bran.

So, the equivalent English cearal product would be a whole grain, crunchy ceral that has been fortified with vitimans.

Here is a link to the "Total" product website for further information ~ http://www.totalcereal.com/default.aspx

lol, they would be well impressed with cranberry crunch! Yeah, I think I have a good idea now what to buy.

7grams of gelatine, so 7x10=70grams
70grams=2.5 ounce. I can work it out that way!

Thanks for the help!

So, it looks like you are going to make the full recipe. That is a lot of Stain Balls !!! Your freezer size, may be a consideration.

So do you leave the hamburger raw? I might sound stupid, but just wondering.

Isnt is bad though, to give your dog 10 RAW Eggs. I thought eggs were actually bad for dogs. Its to much protein for them.. And they are at risk of salmonella poisoning. I also would like to add that theirs another sticky that has a list of toxic foods and it says eggs are bad. It contains some ingredient when given raw..

Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one of the B vitamins. Biotin is essential to your dog’s growth and coat health. The lack of it can cause hair loss, weakness, growth retardation, or skeleton deformity. Raw egg yolks contain enough biotin to prevent the deficiency, so this is not a problem with raw whole eggs. Raw egg yolks could contain salmonella, so you should get your eggs from a reliable source or cook the eggs.

If I made tiny ones, could it be used as a super good once in a while treat thing?

For those who don't know, unflavored gelatin & wheat germ can be found in the baking aisle. Gelatin is usually where the jell-o/pudding is located. Wheat germ is usually where yeast/baking powder is located. Small recipe works great for me, it all depends how big you make the balls & how often you plan on them to your dog. They're a perfect treat on hot summer days.

This recipe really works well. I had a dog several years back that was ill, lost weight , and i fed it to her, and she gained weight back with it. The trick is making certain that they have an appetite and want to eat.
