Exclamation Need Help With Application for Trusty

After months of mostly ridiculous inquiries for Trusty, we finally have one that may have some potential.

However, the big negative:

when asked where the family's dog(s) are kept when the family is not home, the answer was:

Loose in the fenced backyard.

ACK.

They have a young female Pit already, so we all know that she and Trusty should be seperated, when not supervised.

Further, unattended dogs in backyards are just not a good idea anywhere.

Does anyone have any compelling hand-outs re multi-dog safety, as far as securing them inside the home, when you are away?

Thank you, Purple.

They are meeting another dog today, so our 'meet and greet/housecheck' is coming up after that.

Here is my rescue experience with people interested in a dog yet openly state that they allow their dogs to be together 24/7 even when unattended: they do not change what they do just because you make them promise not too. I cannot tell you the number of phone calls I personally fielded from people who adopted a "pit bull" from us only to leave it constantly unsupervised with their other dog(s) only to have a huge fight break out & now they want to return the dog & get their money back (& some even tried to demand that we pay the vet bills for the other dog).

I believe that education is key to preserving these dogs, but honestly I trust people a whole lot less after doing years of rescue work than I did before that. I've been lied to more times than I care to remember & it was the adopted "pit bull" that ultimately suffered from it.

I know have no problem explaining that if having 2 or more dogs run around unsupervised is the kind of lifestyle they want, then they need to go visit the Golden Retriever rescue, the Bassett hound rescue, or the like & we will not be adopting out a "pit bull" to them. Thank you and have a good day.

Thanks for asking, Ellena.

The prospective adopters stated that the meeting with the other dog they were considering went very well, and that the rescue was going to do the reference check.

So, no need for Trusty to 'meet and greet' - plus, I am very much with Mia that I doubt that they would change their habit of keeping dogs alone in the backyard, while they are working ...

I have learned the hard way over the years that people pay lip service, if they want something, but rarely make fundamental and profound changes.

Trusty - or any dog under our care - is way too important and special to us to take any chances.

So, the boy is next to me, snoozing after dinner; right now, he is working on arranging the pillow in his crate just the way he likes it.

Good luck with it. I've got 2 "fosters" that have been with me for over 2 years now (1 for 2 years, 1 for 3 years). Seems that's the way it goes with these dogs.
