Ehh if its anything like Humans and an allergy to metal your going to need something pure, Stainless Steel isnt going to work, nor is cheap silver or gold, lol why those would go on dog is beyond me, but my guess is platinum and titanium would be your best shots, there the only metals I can wear without getting little dark rings around my skin

wait wait wait...you think the grayness means hes allergic to it? is that for real? cause that would explain a lot if so...i just thought it was cheap metal wearing off on him...

Well depending on the metal your using it could be it rubbing off, check the skin not just the fur and see how far it goes, if its fur only then yeah I'd say its just rubbing off, if the skin underneath is turning then I'd say its an allergy, all of my brothers and my mother and I are allergic to metals, its really only Titanium and Platinum that we've found we can wear, shouldve been there when I pierced my ear the first time...dear lord...it was horrible, but yeah check his fur and skin, I believe its wholly possible for a dog to be allergic to metal and it may be something that has just formed in him it doesnt need a predating condition Allergies can form at any point for any reason, mostly prolonged exposure can cause it if they have a weaker disposition, again I'm speaking from a human stand point, but I really dont believe its any different for animals

lol my bad. i dont think he allergic, because all my other dogs will get the grayness too, i just think its from cheap metal, but i may try a harness to see if the redness under his fur goes away, and than comes back if i put the collar back on.

try titanium I think that is how you spell it...its the metal used in surgery might have to get it specially made. but it should work, if it does not then I would move to a leather collar that had a component that makes it like a choker...

What specifically are you referring to? A choke or pinch collar? Those type collars have always turned the necks of my white dogs gray. It's just what they do.

I don't use choke collars, but I have and do use prong/pinch collars when needed. You can buy rubber tips that slip over the tips of the prongs and this will stop the rub-off problem.

a lot of collars I put on them do it, but mostly it seems brass coated collars are the worse.

Stainless steel.
Try stainless steel.
It isn't a "plated" or "coated" metal.

Personally, I'd go with a Stillwater collar.... problem solved.

Ya... I stick to a wide nylon for everyday use, with the addition of a prong for walking.

This site has several different types of metal collar, both style and material. The "Curogan" collar claims to prevent discoloration. They also have ss,brass and other materials from which to choose.

I also have to be very careful as to use very soft, loose fitting collars, because the fur gets rubbed off the bull terrier neck so friggin easily. I ushually use rolled leather collars, extra wide martingales, and im thinking of buying a leather choke collar, 3 for 20 bucks, that will fit loosely.

I just purchased a 2 inch wide martingale black and gold celtic knot collar with stainless steal metal pieces, you think that will make his neck gray? its super soft so shouldnt be a problem, and its really pretty old fashioned looking thing, i like it. rolled collars are nice, but are so small and weak looking, i like wider collars.
