I have to say it makes me feel so much better to read all of the responses here. On another forum it actually turned into a huge debate, with many people citing this a$$wipe's supposed "point" and saying, while they did not condone the act they could "see the point." It really disgusted me. It is great to know that there are many more who are grounded in reality and not afraid to call something what it is, instead of trying to pussyfoot and see the "good" in everything. What a bunch of crap.

It's extremely difficult to express myself in a civil manner ... I cross posted on my forum and signed the petition... absolutely horrific...

Here is some information if anyone wants to write a letter to the Gallery:

Centro Nacional de la Cultura
Antigua Fábrica Nacional de Licores.
Avenida 3, calle 15/17. San José, Costa Rica.
Teléfono: (506) 257 7202 / 257 9370
Fax: (506) 257 8702

Sample Letter to Send the Gallery:
I am writing regarding the horrifying actions of Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, who paid local children to catch a dog on the street and then confined, starved and publicly displayed the dog as an "art" exhibit until the innocent animal died of starvation.

I along with many people world wide am outraged that Guillermo Habacuc Vargas has been selected to represent Costa Rica in "Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008." This man is by no definition of the word an artist. He is a criminally insane sadist and enjoys inflicting prolonged suffering upon his innocent victims.

To state that this animal would have died eventually of natural causes is unjustifiable and beyond logical, rational thinking.

To allow Guillermo Habacuc Vargas to represent Costa Rica in Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008 will in no way benefit Costa Rica. The world is watching and the actions of this so called artist has brought much negative assumptions as to the humanity of the people of Costa Rica. The fact that the many witnesses of this animals suffering did nothing and that the organizers of this event allowed this rather than taking action to see that Guillermo Vargas be criminally charged with animal abuse is sending the world a message that Costa Rica consists of a cruel, uncivilized society that has no regard for life but enjoys viewing and contributing to the loss of life.

Each and every person who knew of and witnessed the suffering of this innocent dog is equally as guilty of causing it's uncalled for death. To let this crime go unpunished and instead be awarded by Guillermo Vargas representing Costa Rica in Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008 is unacceptable and shameful not only to Costa Rica but to all participants of this event.

I urge you, please do not condone the heinous actions of Guillermo Vargas by allowing him to participation in Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008. He should be jailed and prosecuted to the fullest extent of law for this animal's death, not representing Costa Rica as an artist - for he is not an artist and to refer to him as such is an insult to all true artists.

Sincerely,
Your Name

the "point" that some of the people on the other forum saw was this: the artist wanted to show how the people in Costa Rica treat the dogs...so he decided to show them.....and since me and Buddysmom and another member didn't see a point, we got told we were liars and were not paying attention

ok so he makes a sign out of dog food on the wall and ties a starving dog under it to die. Then people gather around and watch this dog suffer and do nothing about it. They call it art, laugh and drink some champagne. The world finds out and throws a shit fit over it.

He could have made the point without sacrificing a dog in an art gallery, but would it have brought all this attention to the problem.

So do I see the point he was making, I guess I do now, do I agree with how he made it, no not really. But, has this all helped the dogs of Costa Rica in the end? All this media attention, outrage, worldwide coverage now focused on how they treat their dogs?

You know, as an artist this really pisses me off. Someone saying that sadistic hack has a point, is like a copycat saying that Hannibal Lecter (or whatever serial killer) had a point. Its just sick. At least everyone here has the balls to say how horrid we think it is...

On a more positive note, an artist (I believe from Germany) recently did an exhibit with a stag and a wolf living in a room together. They must have been well fed since the wolf didn't attack the stag. Plus, *gasp* it had a legitimate point of commentating on predator/prey relations.

How could you walk past that dog and not run over and take it. I guess I would have been in trouble because I just couldn't allow the dog to stay there. This poor dog, it brings tears!!!

Wow Michele, I didn't realize how crazy things got with this topic on the other forum! (I just got done reading some of it...) It was going on when I still was without internet so I didn't really keep track of it after I read the first few responses. I just figured we'd all think this guy was a piece of crap, sign the petition and call it a day. But I guess I was really wrong on that, eh?

Anyway, I signed and I hope this guy dies a miserable and painful death. If someone wants to bring him to me I'll be happy to tie him up, make millions of incisions all over his body and pour rubbing alcohol all over him. Maybe even hammer some toothpicks under his toenails. Not that I've put much thought into how to torture someone or anything...
