Fluid built up in Knee...

As some of you know I was in a head on car accident a few weeks ago. The BF was looking at my knee the other day (the one that got sprained in the crash) and noticed that what we thought was still just swollen was acutely fluid built up in my knee cap. I called my GP and she referred me to a orthopedic specialist. I go to see the specialist next Friday (ugh a week long wait). I’m guessing they will drain it but how? Anyone ever dealt with something like this? I HATE going to the doctors and am really a big baby about it so I’m sitting here freaking out!

They take a syringe and probably a 10-8 gage needle and draw it out. This is the only way I've seen it done. It's really not as bad as it sounds. They will use a topical anesthetic to numb it.

Ew. I had that once... or I probably still do. I got hit by a car walking to school 6 years ago and that screwed up my knee. Got it all checked out and was told I should probably come back and have the fluid drained.... but after them telling me about draining it, I never went back (I despise needles).

This is how I've seen it done too. Fluid buildup tends to hurt after a while. Feels SO much better one drained

Yep, that is how it is done. They numb it, and it will feel sooooooo much better afterwards.

Make sure they order an MRI to inspect for meniscus tears. Oftentimes water build up is the bodies way of trying to protect a damaged knee.

Thanks everyone I hate needles but hearing that my knee will feel better ill get over that fear. Ownedbyboo I had an MRI done at the ER the night of the crash should I ask for another one to be done?
