They can be fine. Inbreeding doubles up on the best of the best genes but also the worst and can bring out recessive genes as well which can be a disaster. It depends on the dogs and what they carry. Those who inbreed usually have really done their homework so to speak on what is behind their dogs pedigrees.

If it is at the beginning of the pregnancy you may want to spay abort unless you are willing to deal with what could possibly happen.

I hope whatever you decide works out for you and the dogs.

You will not know what to look for.....Spay/ abort is the best option.

Given that you don't know anything about genetics, your pups could come out with some nasty genes. So no they won't.

Inbreeding, when used inappropriately such as your case, can have some very, very nasty results.

Inbreeding is a common practice among breeders and often called line breeding.

Breeders who practice line breeding do it to bring out the best traits and minimize the worst. They know every detail of their dogs lineage and put a lot of thought into the breeding before it happens.

Good breeders have their dogs health screened through genetic testing at a specialist vet to check for heart, joint and other problems before breeding and these tests aren't generally done until the dog is two years old. Good breeders also use their dogs in competition to prove them worthy of breeding and make sure the dogs are of rock solid temperament. Also, a good breeder will make sure their dogs do not have skin conditions since these are getting to be common in the bully breeds.

Honestly, its quite possible the pups will be fine. Its also quite possible they will have heart, hip, skin or behavior problems.

Your dog can have anywhere from 1-15 puppies. The record litter size, I believe, is 21. You will need to keep these puppies until they are at least 8 weeks old, provide them quality food, deworming, first round of shots, find them all responsible homes and take care of the mothers nutritional and healthcare needs as well.

Considering the time and expense in caring for mother and pups, that the shelters are killing bully breed pups daily and that there aren't a lot of homes that will really keep a dog for its entire life, I would say call around and find a vet that will do a spay/abort as soon as possible.

as others have said, it can be a good tool when used properly, but can also bring out some very bad recessive genes. Reputable breeders cull as needed, especially with closely bred litters, even if that means having to cull the entire litter.

Yea I was going to say something similar. Male + female + owner who did not spay and neuter or separate female obviously in heat = puppies = 5 to 10 BYB pitbull/mutts X new irresponsible owners multiplied by their ignorance to the tenth power for even more pit bull mutt puppies = a hell of a lot of unwanted dogs in overcrowded shelters waiting to die = 5000 more dead dogs.

Do the math , good work, may I personally thank you the OP for your efforts to help kill so many dogs. Please spay or neuter yourself before you p$#@! on the genes of ignorance and carelessness to your offspring who can then perpetuate the cycle of breeding unwanted dogs in their back yard.

Can we put this on a card and give it out to every chump who brings in an 'oops' litter to a shelter?

    I would Spay/Abort!

  19. #19
Please please spay/abort. There are too many unwanted dogs in shelters as it is.

  20. If the brother and sister were both 100% perfectly genetically healthy there would be no risk. After all, aside from a few single-cell organisms (most in the virus catagory) ALL life that produces sexually does so using DNA and plants that have sex with themselves show us there is no inherent risk in mixing DNA from very close relatives.

HOWEVER no creature is 100% perfectly genetically healthy. Any single gene being mutated is a very low risk, but with so many genes statically every human being most likely has 2 mutated genes. I expect this applies to dogs as well.

Brother-and-Sister or ANY close relation cross has a higher chance of getting a double dose of any mutant gene passed on from mother or father.

In addition to some unknown new bad mutant gene, if ONE parent had a genetic issue that had been in the dog population for along time then sibling crossing with sibling makes it MUCH more likely you'd have a problem than a mating with any other randomly chosen dog.

So if you have had an accidental mating, you are running a higher risk of genetic problems but it isn't a foregone conclusion. In fact, there are some breeds of purebred dog that because they were created from such a few individuals, two randomly chosen dogs will often be as close or even more close than brother-sister combinations of mutts.

Note, you can get the female spayed AND the pups aborted all in one procedure if you do it early enough in the pregnancy.
