Officials bust dogfighting, drug ring in South Ga.

Officials arrested 27 people and retrieved 15 dogs Wednesday after they busted a drug and dogfighting ring during a sting operation in south Georgia.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents and additional law-enforcement officers served arrest warrants in a drug-trafficking case in Donalsonville — 60 miles from Tallahassee, and just northwest of Bainbridge, Ga., — and discovered 15 dogs believed to have been used in dogfighting, said Chief Jimmy Holt of the Donalsonville Police Department.

"There has been a two-year investigation into drug sales and dogfighting in the area," Holt said. "It has been a joint effort. Officials from the DEA, Houston County, Al., Calhoun, Miller, Decatur and Seminole counties in Georgia and the city of Donalsonville were involved."

The investigation revealed that suspects were supplying southwest Georgia and northwest Florida with cocaine and cannabis, Holt said. Officials seized about $40,000, 12 vehicles, two golf carts, a boat and numerous stolen appliances.

With the drug-related arrests just made, animal cruelty charges are expected to follow. Holt confirmed that many of the men and women arrested Wednesday had previous run-ins with the law for drug-related and animal cruelty charges and were only a part of the drug ring.

The breed and condition of the dogs recovered from the scene is still unknown. Representatives from Norred & $#@!ociates — a private security company that conducts pro bono investigations of animal fighting — and the Atlanta Humane Society would not provide many details.

A Norred news release stated that the Humane Society is making efforts to "vet and rescue" the dogs, and Humane Society Vice President of Development Deborah Marshall confirmed that they were taken to an undisclosed location to be evaluated.

"This is standard procedure," Marshall said. "Sometimes people try to come and get the dogs. We want to protect them."

Norred's director of special operations, Chuck Simmons, said that he tipped off police November 2010 about the drug-ring members' involvement with dogfighting.

"Parallel to the animal fighting was the drug ring," Simmons said.

Norred's founder and CEO, Greg Norred, decided to invest company resources to investigate animal fighting when National Football League quarterback Michael Vick was indicted on dogfighting charges in July 2007.

"To date, 44 defendants have been convicted or are awaiting trial on animal cruelty charges," Simmons said. "More than 650 dogs bred for dogfighting have been seized."

Well, obviously these idiots don't care much for the dogs being it seems a lot of drugs goes along with the dogs....WHY would you be anywhere NEAR drugs if you cared about the dogs AT ALL?

Yep, drugs and bulldogs don't mix, because one can be as innocent as can be on the dog fighting side of it, but they will accuse that person of being a dogfighter, and people will immediately believe it, because they think "broke the law to do drugs, why not break the law again?"

    It's not worth the risk.

    As for this quote, "
"Sometimes people try to come and get the dogs. We want to protect them." "

The dogs are probably safer with anyone besides the Norred and $#@!ociates gang.
