Dog breeders face tax evasion charges

$#@!ociated Press 6:04 PM CDT, June 22, 2009 MAUCKPORT, Ind. - Indiana's Attorney General has filed tax evasion charges against two dog breeders accused of selling hundreds of dogs and puppies without collecting sales taxes.

Monday's felony charges against 63-year-old Virginia Garwood and her 26-year-old daughter, Kristen Garwood, come three weeks after authorities seized 240 dogs from their breeding operation in southern Indiana's Harrison County.

A probable-cause affidavit alleges the two women had sold puppies and dogs commercially since 2004 but did not report their dog sale earnings as income and paid no sales taxes.

The mother and daughter face four counts each of evasion of income tax and two counts each of failure to remit or collect sales tax. They also face two misdemeanor charges.
